Riots erupt in Tehran over 'stolen' election

I quite agree with this. It is why I am astounded Khameni was so willing to back Ahamenijad so quickly when the protests started almost immediately. Khameni's painted himself into a corner in that if Ahamenijad doesn't prevail, he comes out seriously weakened.
It's apparant that Khameni seriously underestimated the tumultuous dynamics at play just below the surface of normalcy.

From Reuters:

Breaking NewsGunmen fire at pro-Mousavi rally in Iran; one killed, many wounded: witness 12:56pm EDT

This report, if it is confirmed, highlights the ruthlessness of the Iranian regime and its backers.

Did they just open fire at the masses?
Are they THAT stupid to believe it will help their government?

So it seems.

Apparently Lord Acton extends even to Grand Ayatollahs steeped in Sharia and Islamic jurisprudence.

From the BBC:

The Associated Press and AFP news agencies reported that their photographers had witnessed security forces opening fire, killing one protester.

AP said several others had been seriously wounded.

Yes, the BBC has reported this. I understood it was one reporter killed and several people injured but I was walking through the room so may have heard it wrong.

I apologize for spamming this, but I think it's important and don't want it to get lost on the bottom of the previous page and have nobody see it:

A Facebook group has been created, with a blog coming up shortly. I would encourage everyone to join this group and invite anyone you know who supports this movement.

Apparently so. A person has died BBC reports, but that is all i know so far.

They are probably trying to strike fear.

Another thing Iran's elite should remember is that students played a key role in the last revolution lol

Wow, the Western media is really hyped up over this one. I know we hate Iran and all, but can we please cut the drama? A Facebook group? Give me a break.

In Asian and Middle Eastern news, this is business as usual. I'm not saying I condone it, but are we really that shocked? The international community has done next to nothing to try and stop the rise of fascism in Iran after its original democracy was toppled.

What's it going to take for a UN resolution to stick? A nuclear bomb going off?

@laraabcnews: Iranian State TV reports gun shots at Mousavi rally; AP photog sees govt militia fire at protesters #Iranelection

Still collecting information on the shootings. But please read this excellent account of the rally by the New York Times:

Hundreds of thousands of people marched in silence through central Tehran Monday to protest Iran's disputed presidential election, in an extraordinary but peaceful show of defiance that appeared to be the largest demonstration in Iran since the 1979 revolution.

A broad river of people -- young and old, dressed in traditional Islamic gowns and the latest Western fashions -- marched slowly from Revolution Square to Freedom Square for more than three hours, many of them wearing the signature bright green ribbons of Mr. Moussavi's campaign, and holding up their hands in victory signs. When the occasional shout or chant went up, the crowd quickly hushed them, and some held up signs bearing the word "silence." [...]

Mr. Moussavi attended the rally, addressing a sea of supporters from the roof of a car in his first public appearance since the disputed vote. "The vote of the people is more important than Moussavi or any other person," the Agence France-Presse quoted him as saying. "God willing, we will get back our rights."

The protestors said they would continue, with another major rally planned for Tuesday. But it was too soon to tell whether Mr. Khamenei's decision to launch a probe, or the government's decision to let the silent rally proceed unmolested, would change the election results. Many in the crowd said they believed the government was simply buying time, and hoping the protests would dissipate -- as smaller protest movements have in 1999 and 2003.

He has called for calm, so an "investigation" can be held. When that "investigation" discovers no wrongdoing, the results will quietly be announced to a now-calm electorate. Iran has learned much about how to rig an election in a democracy, they must be watching the US.

So your claiming the US has rigged elections?

Thats ridiculous.

What's it going to take for a UN resolution to stick? A nuclear bomb going off?

The willingness to use force to enforce it.

USA elected a whiny do nothing and most of the west follows the lead of the USA.

...

I would have hoped people where beyond believing a picture of a large crowd=more then a picture of alot of people...But apparently not.
Reminds me..anyone seen a speech yet....yeah:(

To much of this sort of thing might result in a civil war.

If the 'good' side could win that would be a good thing if it wasn't for the fact that it would disrupt oil supplies. I would like to see a quick sort of violent but not too violent revolution with the "right wing extremists" being deposed. That would still cause a serious blip in the oild prices but hopefully not too much of a blip.

What an rediculous suggestion to use force at this time in the situation that we are in. That has got to be a joke. Have you no concept of the fact that an invasion of Iran would mean a third war that we would have to commit twice what we committed to Iraq. We would need one hell of a lot of allies to pull that off not to mention the fact that our forces are rather thin right now! Other than than an invasion what could we do, 0mb them a bit!!! Isn't that what the NEOCON-artists and RNC yahoos criticized Clintonius for !!!

This situation takes some serious thinking out before we do something and not phoney baloney bravado that we get from the NEOCON-artists and RNC yahoos.

Can't have everything.

Question was .."what does it take to enforce UN sanctions."

If you want to argue against my position why not try to formulate an intelligent aguement instead of farting stupidities out of your mouth to the point that someone will figure out that you may be some typical chicken which us real veterans have absolute contempt for.
