Well, over the last year we have proved as a country that we will tolerate almost anything. We just had the government give away over a billion dollars to giant rich corporations, because they screwed up!! If I screwed up 1/10 of the way they did, I would be in jail or homeless. But instead both parties took taxpayer money, and gave it to giant corporations who screwed the economy up in the first place. If that doesn't get people rioting, I don't know what will. And it was not just one party either. So we can't hide behind democracy, saying we will just vote out the people who did it. Bush gave hundreds of billions away, and obama gave hundreds of billions away. People call it socialism, but in reality this is something like the very opposite of socialism. And whatever it is stinks, and yet we do nothing about.

No, I feel quite certain we would accept almost anything, as we are too comfortable in this society, and we have too much to lose by not tolerating it.

Riots erupt in Tehran over 'stolen' electionCut the derailed attempts of getting this into the "Bush stole the elections" debates. Its not what this thread is about and its not going to get derailed.

Frankly, I don't see how Khameni can allow that at this point.

He praised Ahamenijad's victory as a "blessing" and urged everyone not to challenge the official result. Khameni has staked himself to Ahamenijad.

Remember, Khameni is the Supreme Leader--and more than that he is a Grand Ayatollah. He is presumed to be an expert on matters of Islamic law. How does it look if the Grand Ayatollah was hoodwinked by Ahamenijad's ballot box buffoonery?

If Khameni had kept mum, he would have more maneuvering room now. As it stands, he needs Ahamenijad to come out on top in every vote count in order to retain legitimacy.

I was interested to see this morning that the AP first reported that there had been no violence (I wonder who was writing that tripe?) and then revise their reporting to finally start to cover the actual demonstrations, instead of downplaying them.

The BBC, btw, is kicking the ass of ANY American news outlet right now in covering this major story.

And the American media outlets wonder why they are becoming irrelevant?

The BBC have just been reporting on the Rally today, which the reporter was at. He said there were hundreds of thousands of people, possibly millions. He also said that the police kept well away from the protesters but were waiting at the side.

Unfortunately some sounds like shots have been heard. The reporter did not know what this was and said not to be worried yet as it may well be tear gas which sounds like bullets being fired.

The Supreme Leader needs the support of the people, he above anyone else should know the people power in Iran seeing it was because of Iranians, such a position came about when the revolution happened.

    First and foremost.
Khameni cares about himself and his position.
I have also read clerics didn't care for Ahmadinejad

Some of the photos coming out of Iran look amazing.

It's beautiful. I think the western world needs to be reminded occasionally how desperately people around the world hope for freedom and self-rule.
