Kansas Teacher Claims Conservative Views Led to Loss of Job

The guy was a teacher for 19 years, but this was his first year in Kansas. Previously, he had taught in Arkansas.

Fox News Sucks.

You're right, he was a first year under Kansas.

Latham was in his first year of teaching at Lawrence High School but has been a teacher for almost 20 years. Prior to teaching in Kansas, Latham was a teacher in Arkansas

Lawrence teacher says he was fired because of his politics — Kansas Liberty

Well, that opens things up quite a bit. First year teachers can get terminated for all sorts of stuff. And stuff that would get the school sued if they terminated a tenure teacher for.

Well, my fault. That's what I get for trusting Fox to get the basics right. Lesson learned.

I expect Fox to screw up the conclusion. Not the basic underlying facts of the situation.

God I hate mainstream US news outlets. Can't even get the basic facts straight.

We have employment tribunals over here, they deal with contested dismissals, do you?

The article is actually pretty clear.

That is all from the first half of the article. Note the vast number of unsupported claims.

I love it how liberals are quick to pull the "he SAID HE CLAIMED" bull**** on this sort of allegation.

But when a ghetto thug teenager is shot by the police and the parents of this ghetto thug "SAY... CLAIM... STATE... ARGUE" that their son is a sweet little angel who has only been in trouble a few times (more like dozen) in his life and they know the police did the wrong thing, blah blah.

Then the liberals want to slam the police for doing such a evil thing like shooting a poor black kid.

I honestly don't know what more there is to debate regarding this issue. It is clear that we have no FACTS, and we only have 1 side of the story. How ignorant does someone have to be in order to think that "just because the school isn't releasing their side of the story, they must be guilty???" ????

Unfortunately douchebag liberals do this all the time when Police refused to comment on an ongoing investigation after some incident where folks claim police brutality or unlawful shooting or something to that effect.

Once again......just because the accused chooses not to give a statement....you automatically assume they are guilty? The police brutality thing is, more often than not, caught on video tape, therefore the case is usually clear cut. Besides, that happens every day so people are not too interested in debating that subject. However, this teacher claiming he got fired based on his political views, is basically like saying a black teacher got fired because he is black. That would cause a huge uproar from one particular group of citizens...black people. So by jumping to conclusions for one side or the other on this case, you are doing nothing more but showing your own bias beliefs and not waiting for the FACTS before making your mind up.

Case is never clear cut.
Over half of the cases start with a subject on the ground, missing the most important part of the controvesy.

Im not talking about viral videos here, im talking about accidents where police injure citizens, im talking about shootings, police chase incidents.

Im not talking about stupid ass viral videos of some 17 year old pothead baiting the police to get publicity.

So you must be one of the people who believe the police do no wrong, and if they beat someone's ass, that person must have been selling drugs or fighting the cops. Well how pathetic it is that people don't see the corruption in our police force. I personally know an officer who works for the City of Moore OK, who every time I talk to him he's got a new story of other officers using their power to do something illegal like robbing people during traffic stops.

Anyways, this is a different topic than the original topic, I'm getting off the cop topic.. It does nothing but piss me off.

However, I do agree that just because an agency, company, or school district for that matter....doesn't release a comment regarding the accusations, people for some reason automatically jump to the conclusion that they are guilty.. It is quite pathetic.

That is what I was getting at the whole time.

This is why I find those who post in this thread to be a bit hypocritical, since I have witnessed those sticking up for the school district slamming police districts in the law and order forum in similar opposing situations.

Ahhh gotcha :Oopsie

From all the info I have seen on this, the teacher is claiming alot of things, and the school has basically only stated that they followed procedures.

No way to really KNOW either way.

Opinions, on the other hand...

All teachers teach things that at least some parents of their students would disagree with. This is a clear-cut case of "tragedy of the commons", as pretty much all government actions are.

All public schools should be privatized, with the faculty getting voting shares in their ownership. And if you're worried about the poor not being able to afford a good education, a negative income tax would be a reasonable temporary compromise. Parental choice and free market innovation would then make education far better and far cheaper than it is today!

From the artical, this guy reads like far-right. He was really bringing his political beliefs to work with him.
Does this mean all teachers bringing their left wing views into the classroom should be fired too? :)

You know, this could get interesting.

.

You might want to prove that I have argued anything like that before you go and accuse me. Why don't you actually talk about the topic of this thread instead of baiting and rating about liberals, and trying to suggest I have done something I don't do.

Where did I specifically state your name?

I just decided to respond after reading your post, I could have done the same with the other 10s of libs in this thread jumping on the "we haven't heard what the school says" bandwagon.

And we have not heard the whole story. Are you suggesting otherwise? Or are you trying to make a mindless attack against "liberals"? I am guessing the second.

You can completely disregard whatever this guy says, look at his avatar.

No beer? I don't drink any more myself, so I approve of that.

I found a blog entry from one of this guy's students. At least it offers a view to counter this (so far) one-sided argument:

I go to Lawrence High School, and the only reason he is being fired is because you can't express these beliefs as fact, as he was during his class. You can't tell a student that your personal beliefs are fact until they are accepted as fact. Tim Latham was flaunting his beliefs in front of the students and therefore not giving them an actual education but instead a series of regurgitated ideals that he called his own. Would you call that the curicullum?

Then you have the homework issue, where no one was getting anything done in his class. You can't tell a student to accept your beliefs and then do an assignment over it. Several students who did not agree with him felt oppressed in his class room, factionalizing the student population on the issue of whether or not he should be fired. He isn't a teacher, in any regards of the word.
LAWRENCE TEACHER LET GO BECAUSE HE DID NOT FIT IN WITH STAFF - KANSAS 9.12 PROJECT

When I went to school, I noticed a very clear inverse relationship between a teacher's teaching ability and their penchant for letting their personal opinions be known.

Teachers who use their position as a bully pulpit with which to indoctrinate should be weeded out, and this is just as true for the Ward Churchill/Norman Finklestein type leftists as it is the Hannity clones.

The teacher should have gotten himself a homepage and put up links to Code Pink and Daily Kos and Huffington Post. ;)
