Imagine planting a GPS chip inside of someone, and being able to not only track his or her whereabouts, but to cause that person's death, if one so desired, by having the chip release a fatal dose of cyanide inside his body. A Saudi inventor has invented just that, and filed a patent with the patent office in Germany.

Every day, the world gets just a little bit creepier. Of course, if you are a law abiding citizen residing in any nation that eventually uses that chip, you have nothing to be afraid of, right? Just keep your thoughts to yourself, and everything will be fine.

BTW, the device is great for those nagging mothers-in-law.

This device is useful for people who are on probation. Death is a great incentive to not leave your boundary area.

Mostly though, I see huge abuse potential with this: implanting someone and then making them your slave, so long as the person desires to live. I would like to hear the inventor's rationale for creating such a device.

While the device maybe "useful", it is by no means reasonable. Also, failure modes on the chip could have awful results. I doubt it's been tested well for durability, leakage, failure rates, etc.

I would support such a device only if was used on convicted child molesters. They are the worst kind of repeat offender.

The ultimate prenuptial agreement.

I'm surprised Bush and the neocons didn't think of this first.

This is very frightening in a very real ways. The chip alone is the greatest possible threat to privacy without the killer factor.

A Conservative who gets it. You, sir, are a Paleocon after my own kind. Thank you!!

Spike on Buffy had something similar. :2razz:

Yeah that one malfunctioned as well if I remember correctly.

My biggest fear is something like this chip being used by say, loan sharks, the government, or criminal elements.

Although come to think of it, criminal elements pretty much describes the other two I listed :rofl

The basic model would consist of a tiny GPS transceiver placed in a capsule and inserted under a person's skin, so that authorities could track him easily.

Someone hide this information from N Labour

I don't know about a killer chip but the chip idea is a good one considering that a number of the "reformed" Jihadists who went through the Saudi reeducation and reform programs (read revolving door policy) have fled the country and reengaged in the Jihad.

He should be the first person to have one implanted.

I would not support this device in anyone no matter how emotional an argument was constructed. Opening this can of worms is a horrible idea.

Part of the patent involves this:

1. If you ever draw a cartoon of the prophet it is activeted.
2. If you ever drink alchohol but you are not part of the Royal family it it activated.

And eventually.....

If you criticize, Obama, Democrats, Republicans, the government in general, or engage in a protest, it is activated. I know, I know, it sounds over the top, but think about it. If you agree that is should be used on child molesters, drug dealers, and other scum, then it is a slippery slope towards, one day, using it on those who speak out against the government.

Caligula is said to have wept because he could not cut the neck of every Roman citizen with his sword in a single blow. He shoulda been thinking of buttons presses instead of blows.

Before people get worked up over this, realize that all it is is a failed patent application. I (or anyone else) could draw up designs for the exact same thing in about 30 minutes. That doesn't mean there's a chance in hell that it will ever exist.

This type of story serves only to allow people to reaffirm their stances on issues like this.

Bud, I think you've got the wrong perspective on this.

We already have GPS and Verichip. Only a matter of time before the two are combined. Adding a cyanide capsule is evil, but hardly shocking given how some people's minds work. I've been expecting something like this for a while now.

So the patent was not granted because of legal technicalities...that does not mean the device itself was not functional. You hardly need a patent to manufacture something, if someone wants to badly enough...and I guaran-d***-tee you someone will. This is tailor made for the modern dictator.

Yet another reason we need to guard our privacy, and our self-ownership, jealously from the government. I would not support doing this to anyone, it is just way too over the top.

I'm not saying it could never be done, I'm saying that it's not any more of a concern than it was yesterday, which is to say no concern at all to me.

Do you really think that any country where this idea would be feasible is the type of country that has the infrastructure in place to develop, manufacture, implement and oversee this product?

The idea for this has been around for decades. I just don't see why it's any more likely today than it was when it was first described.

Because the technology actually exists, and someone has actually designed one, let the world know it can be done, and put the idea in hundreds of tyrannically-inclined heads.

It might not be done tomorrow; but someone somewhere will use these things in some manner, fairly soon.

I don't think either of these are more true than they were yesterday. Just because a guy applied for a patent doesn't mean he actually designed one. You could apply for a patent on a time machine, but that doesn't mean we're any closer to building one.

It might not be done tomorrow; but someone somewhere will use these things in some manner, fairly soon.

I very much doubt this.

I really don't get you sometimes, bud.

The patent was denied for legal reasons, not technical ones.

There is no information in the article on whether the device was technically feasible or not, granted... you choose to assume that is isn't, and chide people for worrying over it.

We have Verichip already. We have GPS already. A cyanide capsule breakable by remote means is hardly outside our ability to produce. It seems very logical that something like this is do-able, but you decline to acknowlege the possibility at all.

You doubt that some dictator, somewhere, isn't salivating at the thought of putting one of these devices, if he can obtain them, into someone whose loyalty is under question, or someone he wants to force into a course of action, etc?

Your position doesn't seem very logical. I have to wonder if it stems from your apparent determination to appear moderate in all things... even things that anyone ought to flatly condemn.
