Biggest Black Hole Ever Found in Nearby Galaxy - Science News | Science & Technology | Technology News - FOXNews.com

PASADENA, Calif. — The most massive black hole yet weighed lurks at the heart of the relatively nearby giant galaxy M87.

The super massive black hole is two to three times heftier than previously thought, a new model showed, weighing in at a whopping 6.4 billion times the mass of the sun.

For those who share a similar passion and astonishment as I do when discussing astronomy, the dimensions of this black hole are truly awe inspiring.

I read an article recently that discussed the possible theories concerning the activity of matter at a quantum physics level as it enters an event horizon of a black hole. Also mentioned was varying theories discussing the validity of the proposed theories of what occurs at the singularity of a black hole where matter is crushed to an infinite density and the disappearance of space time as we know. I think I have a decent grasp on the very basics of the material and terminology, but I get my mind blown every time.

An exciting frontier in my opinion, new theories are being introduced quite frequently. This theories each present unique perspectives and put a spin on new theories and make improvement upon old theories and subsequently shine light on areas that weren't thought of prevviously.

I would be interested in what Stephen Hawking has to say concerning the recent discovery of the new super massive black hole. Although the black hole in itself does not present any new fields to be studied in itself, the sheer magnitude of it is certain to raise a number of questions and hypotheses.

I always wondered if there is an exit from a black hole and where does that exit lead to if here is one and what form does the matter and/or energy exit in if it does exit. One also must wonder if consciousness an make a trip in and out of a black hole !/?/!!! Is consciousness a form of energy ? Or is consciousness another form of something that we have not defined yet?

Some have considered it and from a show I saw they say that could be a "white hole" which is something that hasn't been seen or proven yet, but it would make sense.

If a black hole prevents light from escaping then that energy has to be transferred to something else. But it hasn't been proven and some think it doesn't exist.

If you perceive space and time in the manner Einstein did, then and picture it like a piece of paper with a marble with the density of our sun in the middle, in which gravity and light are curved around. Then picture a marble with the density described at the singularity of a black hole, 6.4 billion times that of the sun. Some theories suggest that this singularity may be able to 'punch through' the fabric of space time.. Where this exits or if even does and whether it possible for matter to be ejected out of this exit is unknown.

You would be strung like spaghetti and torn apart at a molecular level if you entered a black hole. Therefore you would die. There is no need to travel to a black hole to find out if your consciousness exists or takes a new form after your life is extinguished, nature will take of this question for you someday...perhaps.

Concerning the metaphysics behind the nature of consciousness, you would be better off asking Burning Giraffe or another philosophical guru.

As for the "question" of "nature of consciousness" that was not a question directed at anyone in particular but at everyone in particular, and I just offered it up for "thinkers" to thunk on it. I see that you are also a thunker !!!!!!!

Some say that Black Holes are the remnants of burnt out stars.
If they are burnt out stars then how can they say that there is light inside there but we cannot see it?
I mean if its burnt out there wouldn't be any light?
But it all boils down to: No one knows they are just guessing.

How long until it gets here? What I mean is, will I be able to see the last season of Lost before being crushed into infinite density?

Isn't it just kept, ie that is how a black hole gains mass?

Yes, I would imagine your great great great great grandchildren can enjoy Rocky 1,054 before such a thing happens :)

Well we are still "just guessing" as to what gravity is. We think that we know what all of the effect of gravity are but do we really know exactly how gravity works !!! Is gravity only a "force" ? Is it a form of matter that we do no yet understand ? Is gravity a combination of matter and energy and are the effects of gravity caused by a force of energy and is the matter only a vehicle for gravitational energy to "ride" on ???

The answer my friend is blowing in the cosmic wind !!

Just tell me you aren't going to start preaching about intelligent falling? :rofl

Yes, that was just a joke :)

So like I said: no one knows for sure cause they are only guessing.
The first to send some mass there to see what happens to it will still know very little because they most likely will only have findings that the mass is drawn into it.

Disect a magnet for your answer.

Poly, is "You would be strung like spaghetti " something like the string theory ?? LOL

Seriously it is good to know that there are thunkers here who are not afraid to think on something and come up with thunks about things they have thinked about !!!

Ladies and gentleman start your thunking !!!!!!

magnet huh !!! that is something to flux about !!!!!

how corny or bad can I pun !!!lol

Tis true, tis true! I have that kind of power, but I haven't killed anyone with it, I promise! Anyway, it isn't like anyone is actually gonna miss all that matter I keep gobbling up, and besides, the universe has plenty more! Not to mention i'm billions and billions of miles away from you guys.

But please continue your messageboard postings in awe of me.

I know you weren't directing it at anyone in particular, I just referred you to someone with more philosophical insight than myself.

Thank you for the compliment of calling me thunker, a new one in my compliment repetoire.

And no , being strung out like spaghetti is not similiar to the string theory, which is a whole other mind blowing theory in itself. It was just a metaphor of the horrors your body would be subjected to.

I believe we ( the human race) will learn much of the nature of black holes and perhaps find the Higgins Boson, a.ka. the 'God Particle' when the Large Hadron Collider is fired back up shortly and begins the process of attaining maximum power.

Even if you're theory is wrong, the scenario of a spacecraft making it through a black hole, unable to communicate, and unable to know whether or not you could land on a planet that is habitable, would be enough for me to say "**** YOU I'm not going" hehehehe.

Seriously? What good is it to know you could make it if you are unable to communicate you made it or whether it was worth it?

At least Columbus was able to come back and say what he did.

This reminds me of the movie 'Contact' based on the book by Carl Sagan. If you haven't seen the movie I highly recommend it. If you have, the last 1/2 hour of the movie is the part I am referring to.

I've seen it and it is good, however, it doesn't even play the same story line here.

Bottom line, even she made it back to tell the story.

With a black hole there is NOONE to come back and tell a story. A wormhole is different than a black hole at least the theory of it.

IMHO and it may be wrong and I have no proof of it but my own opinion that I will explain later. The theory is the Universe is an expanding universe and that everything that expands much contract. Well what if these black holes take matter and at the other end extract it to prevent the universe from contracting back in on itself?

While you thunkers figure this out, I have to fill my log book out and balance my check book. :coffeepap

Wow, that sure is one big black hole

Right, she made it back to tell her story, but with out any evidence except the 18 hours or whatever of static there was on the videotape.

And it better be in the black, not the red, or we'll send Mike Tyson to bite you're ear off. :rofl
