Does the president of the USA have a taste tester? Someone who makes sure the food he eats is not poisoned? - Yahoo!7 Answers

MILTON – In olden days, royalty had what they called food tasters, a seemingly thankless and terrible job whereby someone would taste the lord's food – at considerable personal risk – to stave off the very real threat of poisoning.

Though the availability of poison has not have changed, the methods by which it is detected certainly have. And that's where Councilman Alan Tart comes in.

No, he not really the president's food taster. But close.

Tart, a regional retail food specialist with the FDA since 1999, is part of a specialized, 15-member team that steps in during "high security" events or disasters. It has been called upon for the G-8 summit, hurricanes Katrina, Gustav and Rita, the Republican and Democratic national conventions and Sept. 11.

Tart said the Secret Service and FBI will contact the FDA and request the team if they believe food security may be an issue. The official inauguration of the President of the United States of America Jan. 20 fall into that category.

"Food defense has been a major issue for us," said Tart, who will leave Jan. 15 and return a week later. "It has been identified as a major weakness in our fight against terrorism."

Not only that, but there is unbelievable scrutinizing when it comes to the preparation of Presidential meals.

Food experts, employed by the Secret Service, dress in civilian clothing and travel throughout the United States to purchase groceries.

So location is the driving force? If Obama had a food taster in England you wouldn't have started the thread about his "Highness"? It's not that he had a food taster but that he had a food taster at this specific location?

What makes English food more accepting of a food taster then French?

I think consuming food to insure that it is not poisoned, wondering if every bite will be your last, would be low on my desired job list.

It's part of redundant measures taken. Have you ever heard of a Presidential food taster dying from performing his job?

I think it is prudent that the leader of any country has someone to taste his food beforehand such as is described above.

Apparently YOUR sarcasm-detector is off. I'm satirizing the point that conservatives are the only one who call Obama "His Highness" when they're trying to paint the picture that liberals are Obama's lapdogs and follow his every command as if they're scripture. It's really a joke that they criticize the people who agree with whatever he does when the people who agree with whatever he does are usually not the ones who are involved in politics. That's very different from the case where people listen to Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or Bill O'Reilley and believe they have some better grasp on politics than another person just because they have louder yelling abilities.
