Conservatives racing ahead in EU parliament voting

Associated Press Writers – Sun Jun 7, 7:01 pm ET

BRUSSELS – Conservatives raced toward victory in some of Europe's largest economies Sunday as initial results and exit polls showed voters punishing left-leaning parties in European parliament elections in France, Germany and elsewhere.

Sounds like the leftists are losing the a** over in Euroland. Could this be repeated in the US in 2010? Perhaps. If BO-nomics keeps giving us hope and change.

Europe is currently in the Conservative end of its cycle.

It's the neo-cons who favor regionalization and border deregulation, so I am not surprised that the recent EU elections are bringing them to power. I will note again, however, that the very existence of an overseeing "EU government" is not constitutional because the people of Europe were not given a referendum for its existence.

Not really true.

The EU elections have always been a way for people to "protest" vote against a sitting government or some issue. That is what happened this time in most countries. Some exceptions are due to local issues like chaos in the left wing opposition (France for example).

Europe goes in cycles. late 1970s early 1980s = Conservative late 1980s to middle 1990s = left, middle/late 1990s to now = conservative.

The next many elections will bring the opposition into power and most of those are left leaning. Of course it depends on the country and state of the opposition parties.

In fact after reading up on the news, the Yahoo article is misleading to say the least.

The conservative block lost seats in this election, just as the socialist block did. The Green gained and the far right and non aligned gained heavily at the expense of the conservative block and the socialists. This is of course very dependant on where the British conservatives place themselves.. they are at the moment considered non aligned by most. But if you throw them into the conservative block, then the conservatives gained 2 to 4 seats in this election.. not exactly a "blow out". Remember the right wing main block was already in power in the EP.

In the UK, the Conservatives did not per say win, since most of the Labour voters either stayed at home or voted for UKIP. From what I understand, many of the hardcore labour areas had shockingly low turnout among labour voters which put UKIP and others ahead. I even read (not confirmed it yet) that the conservatives in the UK lost votes (as a % of what they got last time) so it is not exactly a resounding backing of the conservative movement.

In France, the opposition is in total collapse mode. The French Socialists are in fighting big time internally. And that does not help their electability.

In Italy, again the opposition is in total chaos. That helps the sitting conservative fascist government. However saying that, the socialist block gained a seat while the far left got wiped out.

In Germany, the socialists held their mandates, but it was the liberals that lost to the conservative block.

In Beligum.. well, most of those votes went to the far right racist parties I suspect.

But if you look at places like Denmark, it was in fact the socialists who gained as it was in several countries. In Cezh Republic the conservatives were basicly wiped out. In Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia all saw socialists gaining seats. Other places the Conservative block lost seats to the far right and non aligned.

So it is a bit harsh to say that "conservative" views/policies/parties are racing ahead in Europe. And when it comes to national elections, many of the fringe parties (UKIP, BNP, and so on) are not even represented or stand a chance.. soo.

In UK i don't believe it is an understatement to say Conservatives has done very well in the sense that they have now 'broken into' Labour heartlands and have taken councils that hasn't been conservative for 30+ years.

It's ironic that BO wants to make leftists out of everyone here, like in Europe, and yet the Euros are moving right.

That aint how I see it.

First off you have a labour party in totally self destruction. Typical of any party that has been in power so long. That will no matter what political colour of the party, mean that turnout among loyalists will be down.

Secondly you have the expense scandal. Both parties are hit, and in fact I would claim the worst offenders (duck pond) are conservative. But it is perceived that the conservatives did a better job in dealing with it which I some what agree with. However as I said, some of the worst offenders were conservative and that has been muffled in the anti-Brown debate.

Thirdly if you look at the turnout numbers. It is not that the Conservatives have won votes from Labour, but that Labour voters have stayed home. That too can change the political landscape and in this case it has on both the local level and EU level.

If you look at the numbers for the EU elections, the UK Conservatives did not get many more votes than last time. In fact I think they are down vote wise. Labour on the other hand, had a horrible turnout among it's core voters, and many of those that did turnout voted for UKIP or other radical fringe parties as a protest vote.

So the national election is still wide open as the Conservatives have no policies to go with other than "we aint Brown" plus the Conservatives have a tendency to self destruct also.

There is no doubt that the elections when they come, will be interesting to watch.

It is an interesting event and I believe partially the result of the REALITIES confronting many in Europe that they cannot afford to keep FUNDING their Socialist Programs.

I would not hold my breath that this is Europe getting a reality check however; when the many who receive this largess begin experiencing the REAL pain of losing their giveaways, they will revolt back to politicians who promise them anything to get elected.

The most important component to any Socialist Politician is an uninformed and ignorant populace who fall for this farcical political rhetoric.
