Sounds like the leftists are losing the a** over in Euroland. Could this be repeated in the US in 2010? Perhaps. If BO-nomics keeps giving us hope and change.
Conservatives racing ahead in EU parliament voting - Yahoo! News
In fact after reading up on the news, the Yahoo article is misleading to say the least.
The conservative block lost seats in this election, just as the socialist block did. The Green gained and the far right and non aligned gained heavily at the expense of the conservative block and the socialists. This is of course very dependant on where the British conservatives place themselves.. they are at the moment considered non aligned by most. But if you throw them into the conservative block, then the conservatives gained 2 to 4 seats in this election.. not exactly a "blow out". Remember the right wing main block was already in power in the EP.
In the UK, the Conservatives did not per say win, since most of the Labour voters either stayed at home or voted for UKIP. From what I understand, many of the hardcore labour areas had shockingly low turnout among labour voters which put UKIP and others ahead. I even read (not confirmed it yet) that the conservatives in the UK lost votes (as a % of what they got last time) so it is not exactly a resounding backing of the conservative movement.
In France, the opposition is in total collapse mode. The French Socialists are in fighting big time internally. And that does not help their electability.
In Italy, again the opposition is in total chaos. That helps the sitting conservative fascist government. However saying that, the socialist block gained a seat while the far left got wiped out.
In Germany, the socialists held their mandates, but it was the liberals that lost to the conservative block.
In Beligum.. well, most of those votes went to the far right racist parties I suspect.
But if you look at places like Denmark, it was in fact the socialists who gained as it was in several countries. In Cezh Republic the conservatives were basicly wiped out. In Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia all saw socialists gaining seats. Other places the Conservative block lost seats to the far right and non aligned.
So it is a bit harsh to say that "conservative" views/policies/parties are racing ahead in Europe. And when it comes to national elections, many of the fringe parties (UKIP, BNP, and so on) are not even represented or stand a chance.. soo.
