Iraqis detain 5 US contractors in Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Five U.S. contractors have been detained in the investigation of the slaying of another American in Baghdad's Green Zone, officials said Sunday, in what may become the first case of U.S. citizens facing Iraqi justice under a security agreement that took effect this year.

U.S. and Iraqi officials said the five have not been charged in the death of Jim Kitterman, 60, a construction company owner from Houston, whose body was found May 22 in his car in the Green Zone. He had been blindfolded, bound and stabbed.

The five were believed to be the first Americans taken into Iraqi custody since the U.S.-Iraqi security agreement went into effect this year. The agreement removed immunity from Iraqi law enjoyed by private U.S. contractors since the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003.

Finally contractors who commit crimes in Iraq are subject to the laws of the country that the crimes were committed in. No more protection. No more secretcy..Iraqi justice is what these men will receive if they are found guilty of this crime. There was a time not so long ago when we would have never even heard of this crime...it would have been wisked under the sands of Iraq just as many other crimes have been wisked away under to old rules of "civilian contractor" engagment. No more immunity from Iraqi law.

Let the Iraqis apply their laws to the incarcerated

Let's see...if under Iraqi law the death penalty can be imposed for murder and these guys are found guilty in a Iraqi court of law and these contractors are sentenced to death for this crime?

Is America going to be able to swallow that pill?

No problem at all, I just wish the rule were retroactive so Blackwater could get what it deserves.

I have no problems with it. Commit a crime in another country, and you are subject to their system of justice. I'm not a fan of murderers, and wish we used the death penalty more in the U.S., frankly, without the long and expensive appeals process.
