The story of Walter Kendall Myers and his wife Gwendolyn reads like a John Le Carre novel, perhaps crossed with a Miss Marple whodunnit.

A glamorous story of spying, deception and coded messages between Washington and Havana.

But also with a touch of mundane domesticity about it, with secret meetings held in supermarkets with classified documents exchanged in shopping trolleys! Can this really have been a safe way to carry out grand espionage?

If the US Department of Justice is to be believed, for over three decades this American couple, now in their seventies, were spying for the Cuban government.

The allegations are that from his position at the state department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR), Mr Myers was able to access top secret documents and pass them to his handlers from the Cuban Intelligence Service.

According to court documents filed in Washington, Mr Myers was first approached by the Cuban government in 1978, and he and his wife, a banking analyst, agreed shortly afterwards to provide information to Cuban intelligence.

Mr and Mrs Myers were eventually rumbled after an undercover sting operation. An FBI agent posing as a Cuban intelligence officer approached Mr Myers, telling him that he had been sent by the Cuban government to obtain information from him.

During a subsequent meeting, Mr Myers and his wife agreed to provide information about US government personnel to the undercover agent, and made statements about their past activities for the Cuban government, the Justice Department alleges.

They apparently told the undercover agent that they had been making plans to one day escape to Cuba travelling by boat. Mr Myers said he studied shipping charts and maps.

Seems those commies got you good

My favorite part of the story:

Officials said the couple, Walter K. Myers, 72, and Gwendolyn S. Myers, 71, received little in the way of compensation from the Cubans except for the short-wave radio and some travel expenses. Rather, the officials said, the couple appears to have been driven by their strong affinity for Cuba and their bitterness toward “American imperialism.”

“We think they did it because they love Cuba,” said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case.

...

The indictment and the government’s supporting material say the Myerses were recruited as spies during an academic trip to Cuba in 1978.

In a diary entry that the Justice Department said Mr. Myers wrote at the time of the trip, he expressed his passion for Cuba and its Communist revolutionary goals and his distaste for “American imperialism” and the United States’ indifference to medical care, the poor and other basic public needs. “Cuba is so exciting!” he wrote, adding that “the revolution has released enormous potential and liberated the Cuban spirit.”

God I hate dirty ****ing hippies.

Im shocked that this thread is not getting more attention. For 30 years the Myers betrayed the United States. And we find out now when the Obama admin is attempting to normalize relations with Cuba. I understand they face 35 years in prison. IMO this warrents the death penalty. Think of the ramifications. Who has Cuba shared this information with? Think about it.

Sentencing them to death would remove any leverage we could use in extracting information that they may have shared. They need the illusion to hope so they will tell us what info they shared and hope we will be merciful.

My dad (who, ironically, is Cuban himself) knew the guy in the early 90's. Said he rambled on about how it was a bad thing that the Soviet Union was falling appart. You'd think that would warrant attention but from what I hear such oddities are common in U.S. government employees.

Good point Gibberish

Sentence them to 30 years of listening to Toby Keith. Reprieves granted for cooperation in revealing the spy network in which they participated.

I had to look up who Toby Keith is, and upon seeing it, I believe it would be unconstitutional. Having to listen to country music is clearly "cruel and unusual".

you sentence them to death and use that as leverage to get them to spill their guts

Hey hey, only Nashville country sucks. Outlaw country like Steve Earl, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Hank Williams III, Eleven Hunhred Springs, Robert Earl Keen, Hayes Carl, the Gourds, The Derailers, Wayne "the Train" Hancock, Austin Cunningham, and a multitude of other artist (who would never grace the office of a Nashville record executive) rock!

Trust me, you don't know what your missing if you write off all country music based on the crap that comes out of Nashville.

And besides, I am Sgt Rock :rock would I steer you wrong when it comes to music?

That's a good idea especially if it is our spies that get captured. BRILLIANCE.

And this pleases you?

Anyone who pines over the breakup of the Filthy Soviet Empire is either a Russian whack job or a Commie /Russian apologist. The death sentence is too good for human fecal matter like these two. This case makes one want to rethink the demise of torture as a policy.

These two filth buckett taitors desrve to be throw into a pool of a seage treatment plant so that they can enjoy the company of their bacteria friends and family members.

In my opinion traitors are about as low as child molestors.

I don't care who they are. Try them, and execute them. Period.

Traitors are amusing? Learn something new every day.

No, the whole situation amuses me. You embargo the mofos, try and crush them in every way economically, try and kill off the Castros and there communism, that pathetic little commie island off Florida, yet they got the strings being pulled in the top levels of security in America. Thats whats funny. I love America, i want it to succeed, dont get me wrong.

Yeah, that's pretty plain to see from your amusement.

Frankly, as an American, I'm completely disgusted by any American that commits espionage against this country. Other Americans have died because of scumbags like these, and frankly, I don't find it amusing in the least. Just my 2 cents.

Actually im sure he was Cuban, ill read the article again. But the commies did get you good. ;)

Just saying.

Spies kind of know this going in, unless they are suckers. LACK OF BRILLIANCE :doh

Well good to know you approve of and encourage this treatment of our guys that get caught.

Yeah, let's cheer on the torture of Americans, after all that's how you cheer on the treatment of other guys, so what's the difference right?.

It's not the first time. I wonder how funny it will be if it turns out that the information they passed to the Cubans led to the deaths of any Americans or Cubans. Will you still be laughing then?
