For some reason I'm reminded of that scene in Blackadder Goes Forth about the spies:

"Blackadder Goes Forth" General Hospital (1989) - Memorable quotes

Captain Darling: So you see, Blackadder, Field Marshall Haig is most anxious to eliminate all these German spies.

General Melchett: Filthy hun weasels, fighting their dirty underhand war!

Captain Darling: And fortunately, one of our spies...

General Melchett: Splendid fellows, brave heroes risking life and limb for Blighty!

The Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR), drawing on all-source intelligence, provides value-added independent analysis of events to Department policymakers, ensures that intelligence activities support foreign policy and national security purposes; and serves as the focal point in the Department for ensuring policy review of sensitive counterintelligence and law enforcement activities. INR's primary mission is to harness intelligence to serve U.S. diplomacy. The bureau also analyzes geographical and international boundary issues. INR is a member of the U.S. intelligence community.

My dad (who, ironically, is Cuban himself) knew the guy in the early 90's. Said he rambled on about how it was a bad thing that the Soviet Union was falling appart. You'd think that would warrant attention but from what I hear such oddities are common in U.S. government employees.
It was a pretty big disaster for a huge amount of people around the world.

It's not the first time. I wonder how funny it will be if it turns out that the information they passed to the Cubans led to the deaths of any Americans or Cubans. Will you still be laughing then?
What information could they possibly have passed on that would do this? Last I was aware, Cuba and the US weren't at war.

From what I hear though he was speaking admiringly of the Soviet Union, and that's a bit odd when you work for a government whose enemy is the Soviet Union.
