Obama slams Holocaust deniers at concentration camp
Fri Jun 5, 2009
By David Alexander

BUCHENWALD, Germany (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama took aim at those who deny the Holocaust -- including Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad -- when he made an emotional visit to the Buchenwald concentration camp on Friday. After telling a U.S. television network that Ahmadinejad should visit Buchenwald himself, Obama accompanied two survivors of the Holocaust and Chancellor Angela Merkel on a tour of the camp, outside Weimar in eastern Germany.

"To this day we know there are those who insist the Holocaust never happened, a denial of a fact or truth that is baseless, ignorant and hateful," Obama said in a brief address. "This place is the ultimate rebuke to such thoughts, a reminder of our duty to confront those who would tell lies about our history," he added. "I will not forget what I have seen here today. These sights have not lost their horror over time."

Buchenwald survivor and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, 80, accompanied Obama to the camp set up by the Nazis in 1937. An estimated 56,000 people were killed there.

Obama and Merkel also visited the so-called Little Camp, where the conditions and treatment of prisoners were especially poor. Wiesel was kept there for some time. Little Camp was known as the Jewish Camp because nearly all of its about 2,000 prisoners were Jews -- Polish, French, Russian and Dutch. The camp's gatehouse is intact and the words "Jedem das Seine" ("To each his destiny") are carved into the iron gates.

Good for him.

I would expect nothing less from an American or any other Western World head of state.

I am waiting for the extremist wing of the Whacko Tacko right to accuse President Obama of apologizing for the holocaust. Ater they have accused him ( falsely of course ) of apologizing for evrything else which he did not.

Here we go with another closet lefty posing as an "Indepedent". :doh

What does such a claim on your part have to do with what he said? I understand his point is hard to argue with, but you could have at least tried. You seem to have to default to attacking posters instead of what they say alot. It seems as if you are pretty overmatched by most of those on the left in actual debate on topics.

Agreed

As if moonbats on the left don't exist. Every group has it's fringe element, so your statement is basically worthless.

I have to admit I am kind of tired of the many liberals here who try and say they are moderate all the time ranting about the right. To be honest I am probably more moderate then most of them.

Anyway, this is derailing the thread.

Obama did a good thing with bashing Holocaust deniers, no doubt.

I think this was a very important thing the President did. There seems to be a very dishonest, despicable campaign being waged that Obama is trying to weaken Israel and side with "the enemy."

Obama is committed to Israel as an ally. Like friends sometimes do, you have to confront them over their behavior. This is not abandoning them and siding with the enemy.

Obama has confirmed where he stands. The U.S. is an ally of Israel, and we will support her and help ensure her survival on his watch.

To be honest Tashah, I would actually appreciate reading your opinion on this event. You have a unique perspective. Given all the partisan knives that are flying regarding Obama and Israel, what does this visit and speech mean to you?

Thanks.

There is that both ways. I suspect we all kinda think we are moderates and don't see that we are further from the center than we want to admit.

I've actually never seen you debate anything. YOu just say " YOU ARE A LEFTIST " to anyone with a view differing from your own.

Obama had previously visited Yad Vashem in Israel. His visit now to the site of the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany is also notable. I can only commend him on these events. As the World War II generation fades away, the voices of Holocaust denial increase in number and the attacks on history are becoming much more pronounced.

If you read the above paragraph, it is obvious that Obama is very history-conscious. As far as Obama and the I/P issue, I am undecided. He is either genuine and sincere in his quest for a permanent settlement of the I/P core issues, or he is being disingenuous here and will invoke whatever he considers necessary to manufacture a glossy post-presidential legacy.

I hope for the former, and I fear the latter.

Better, why didn't Obama slam the laws restricting speech that makes something as silly as denying the Holocaust a crime?

That's the most serious aspect the Holocaust Denial scene, that the freedom of the people is curtailed.

You accept the use of "Whacko Tacko right?"

Don't you think American has a right to be resentful of comments like that?

You miss the point. There is a difference between posting a comment on some one affiliation, and posting on a topic. Simply posting that some one is a lefty has nothing to do with the topic.

American makes just as juvenile if not worse comments on a regular basis. In fact they dominate his posting style. If he can't take that he needs stop rubbing the lotion on his skin and let it toughen up a bit.

Now that's 2 things Obama has done right. :ind:

I guess he'd call me a "Holocaust Denier" as well, just because I believe in unlimited free speech rights and pursue an objective view of history without any government bias. A lot of lies were spread for Roosevelt's and especially for Stalin's benefit, and a lot of Soviet atrocities were blamed on Germany instead.

Many other things we are taught about World War II are total lies - that the Japanese initiated aggression against USA first, that nuking them was necessary, that Hitler wanted to exterminate all Jews no matter what, that his suspicions about a communist "fifth column" in Germany were unfounded, etc, etc, etc. :(
