Gingrich backs off Sotomayor 'racist' labelWASHINGTON (AP) -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday he shouldn't have called Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor a racist, but said he was still concerned that she would bring bias to her decisions.

In a letter to supporters, the Georgia Republican said that his words had been "perhaps too strong and direct" last week when he called Sotomayor a reverse "racist," based on a 2001 speech in which she said she hoped the rulings of a "wise Latina" would be better than those of a white male without similar experiences. Gingrich's remarks created a furor among Sotomayor's backers and caused problems for GOP figures who have been pushing to bring more diversity to the party.

Gingrich conceded that Sotomayor's rulings have "shown more caution and moderation" than her speeches and writings, but he said the 2001 comments "reveal a betrayal of a fundamental principle of the American system -- that everyone is equal before the law."

Sotomayor, 54, would be the first Hispanic and the third woman to serve on the high court.

Gingrich's reversal came as Sotomayor's supporters hit back against GOP criticism of her 2001 remarks and the notion that she would bring personal prejudice to rulings. They circulated a 1994 speech in which the judge made similar statements. Sotomayor disclosed the speech during the 1997 Senate debate over seating her on a federal appeals court, but no Republican publicly voiced concern about it at the time.

In that speech, Sotomayor said, "I would hope that a wise woman with the richness of her experiences would, more often than not, reach a better conclusion" than a wise man.

This is "Why The Republicans Keep Losing".

They have no balls, but oddly enough, they're like furniture on wheels and can be pushed around all over the place. Sotomayor's comment WAS racist. Nor is it the job of the appellate and supreme courts to be "compassionate". Their job is to interpret the law, they're not supposed to care about the parties involved.

Yet Noot refuses to stand his ground, back pedals, and generally tells the people on the Right (in the right), the base of the GOP, that their concerns regarding the social marginalization of the majority, won't be opposed by the party that wants their vote but who won't do anything to earn it.

This reversal by Noot, demanded from him by THE REPUBLICANS, is emblematic of the entire problem the GOP has: No balls, too far left.

That's because white men are due to thier education, better equipped to be gracious and magnanomous than latino women from the ghetto. :ssst:

True enough. Latino women from the ghetto are equipped for more fundamental activities.

Newt is flipflopping because they know that the "racist" rehetoric will cost the Republicans every single hispanic vote in the future.

You know, I'm not Hispanic, but I've lived around and known many such people in my life. And I want to say that I find it quite objectionable for anyone to regard these people as some sort of hive with a single mind and composed of identical entities.

As much as it might surprise some people, persons of Spanish extraction think, emote and motivate as unique individuals, with a wide spectrum of opinions and affiliations.

So, I don't worry overmuch that they will act en masse like a school of fish because they are offended that some member of their artificially constructed demographic was called out on her outrageous statements.

Yes I sure do hope that Newt and Rush and Ann keep up their trash talking. I'm sure that most every single hispanic is rushing to sign up to vote Republican in the next election..
Keep up the good work..the Dems love ya.....:2wave:

What possible good would it do for the Republicans to do as the Democrats do, and tailor their opinions and statements simply to get votes and win elections? Politics isn't like the NFL, where one roots for their team and wants them to win just because it's their team.

We seek to to take stands, popular or not that are based on facts, practicality, philosophy and principle. Sometimes, as in making sausages, it isn't pretty.

If we are defeated, it will be for standing for something. Let other Parties prostitute themselves for votes.

Oh and as for the Dems loving anyone, it is as I say the love of the harlot, for sale.

History doesn't support that conclusion. The Democrats tore apart Clarence Thomas and it didn't hurt them with blacks. They also blocked the appointment of Miguel Estrada and it didn't hurt them with Hispanics. John McCain was the architect of the amnesty bill for illegal aliens, most of which are Hispanic, and he only got a little over 25% of their vote last year.

Ummm where have you been for the last 20 years, that is EXACTLY what politics HAS been. It's not supposed to be that way, but that is what has been happening.

The ones that follow politics, views of the politicians, and actually think are a small minority compared to the ones that just vote Dem/Rep or 1-2 issue voters.

My father is one of those ignorant people on the left that just votes Dem, and I have a neighbor on the other scale of ignorance that will only vote Republican.

You haven't listened to Rush lately have you?

No....has he flipped flopped and is now backpeddleing like Newt?
His angle is that he might change his mind if she is basically pro-life. Apparently she might be or at least sensitive to it.

So now it is alright to be racist as long as you are against abortion?

First of all, the statement only sounds racist when you take it out of context.

Secondly, IMO, pandering to the base is what is hurting the Republicans. The far-rights, social conservatives represent a very small but loud minority.

Gingrich was an effective party leader at one time; to preserve his reputation as being a reasonable, thoughtful, and intelligent reputation, he has done the right thing here.

So what it sounds like is conservatives are changing their tune about her being racist IF she is pro-life.

That is amusing as hell :rofl

A guess there is hope for the republicans yet. Trying to paint a her a racist was a terrible move to start with. Although I can't agree with her comments, they were hardly a huge deal. Newt would have been better served by not igniting the race powder keg. At least he has figured out he made a mistake and is moving to correct it.

So what do you want? Frankly I don't think should approve a damn thing your boy does. He hates America like most liberals.

Really? That's all you can bring here? I mean, conservatives are now changing their tune about her being racist because she MAY be pro-life, and you come back with this hyper-partisan BS?

You're dismissed :2wave:

And you think that the "real AMRICAN " comment by The Igloo Girl wasn't "tailoring" !!!! Think again!!

The speculation is over her having no paper trail of where she stands on abortion and the fact that she is Roman Catholic. I know plenty of Catholics that are not pro-life.

That's the way the Democrats act. It's all about the (D), to them. No (D), no vote. Thinking isn't their forte.

Americans are different, which is why the Republicans, who want to be considered the party of the Americans, have such a difficult time of it, because the Republicans keep trying to follow the anti-American role model the Democrats present.

No. Claiming her latina vagina gives her better insights than what a white male can have is a racist and sexist comment, period.

Also, she's definitely racist.

She's a member of a racist group that calls itself "The Race", or "La Raza", in Mexican.

Secondly, IMO, pandering to the base is what is hurting the Republicans. The far-rights, social conservatives represent a very small but loud minority.

Your opinion is wrong. First off, they're not pandering to their "base", since their base is the core of Americans left in the country. They're pandering to the left wing media and chasing after the Democrats.

Gingrich was an effective party leader at one time;

No.

Noot was an effective revolutionary, he sucked as a "leader".

to preserve his reputation as being a reasonable, thoughtful, and intelligent reputation, he has done the right thing here.

What he did was preserve his reputation for being a ****ty "leader" more interested in compromise than principle. You'll just have to take my word for it, Americans don't trust Noot and he does not have a reputation as thoughtful or reasonable.

You're just being an a-hole about this judge. Do you think everyone said she's racist? Beside, I'm just telling you what someone else said. All I know is I don't trust Obama.

Do you like her? And if so, say why.

The fastest way the Right could get The Messiah to withdraw Sotomayor's nomination would be to successfully paint her as pro-life.

However, if she is pro-life, the racism issue pales, since stopping the slaughter of millions of babies a year is an important goal for real Americans.

Anyone actually think anyone nominated by The Messiah will oppose the murder of babies?
