It's a poor region in Montana and they could use the jobs.

The only person who really wanted them was the Economic Development Director.

They did have a county vote amongst the politicians saying they'd take them.
That about as likely the view of those they supposedly represent as Osama Bin Laden and that egyptian turd having their base of operations in Hardin, Montana. Likely why Congressional Reps have pretty much dismissed the idea.

No reason to move them from gitmo, no reason to close gitmo.
gitmo will be needed in the future.

Some townspeople - whether they like the idea or not - doubt it will come to pass.

"I saw on the news last night that there are only three prisons in the country that could hold them, maximum-security prisons. So what's this little one-horse deal? There ain't a chance in hell," said Bill Moehr, 77, a former cattle ranch manager who lives next to the jail.

Bonnie Kennedy, a 60-year-old convenience store clerk who also lives next door, chuckled when asked if she thought terrorists would be moving in any time soon.

"Like that's going to ever happen. But it did put us back on the map," she said. "I can't say I like it, but it might get us some interest from somebody who could actually use it."
IOW DOA..and the residents(forget the politicians) seem to clearly understand its all a PR stunt.

    Who says its closing?

    Guantánamo detainees to get laptops

They are setting up a computer lab equipped with state of the art laptops for Gitmo approved classes. Come to Gitmo and get a degree.

    "no timetable for closure"
    Thank you

My home town has 4 or 5 prisons(I forget to be honest, I avoid actually going into town), one of which is being closed down. We need jobs badly, so I think we would happily take the detainees if it meant keeping the one prison open.

They are for the men who are leaving Gitmo as soon as there is a country willing to take them. They are not being returned to their home country.

meh, I don't necessarily have a problem with 17 laptops.

Have you seen any of the "inside Gauntanamo" specials a couple of the educational cable channels have run? Anything that keeps the prisoners occupied and not messing with the guards is money well spent.

Well that aside, it's some detainees that are getting laptops. And those "some" are the ones we have already decided to release and just have not worked out the details of to where yet. But these are men who will be free. They are men we don't want to hold anymore. Men we've decided don't need to be locked up. Right?

So who cares. I find it hard to get excited about it.

We have captured the enemy, disarmed them, and they are now our prisoner. We've done something and the threat they posed has been neutralized. Now we treat them like humans, despite their crimes, and we try them. If our case is sound they will be convicted. And the threat will remain neutralized.

We do not honor the human rights of our citizens simply because they are citizens. We honor them because we have an obligation as a civilized nation to act civilized.

Every time you spout garbage that equates observing human rights to "doing nothing about the enemy" you make yourself look foolish. Torturing the enemy or treating them inhumanely is not fighting them. Your analogy is illogical and very disingenuous.
I believe that we should treat the detainees with the utmost level of respect. They should also stay in Guantanamo. The two are not incompatible.

As celticlord pointed out, prisons are for people who broke the laws of this country and are awaiting trial with all the rights due under the Constitution. These people did not break the law of this country and are not awaiting trials with all the rights due under the Constitution. They have no business being in our prisons.

Gotta get that past Baucus and Tester.
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
