Feds spike voter citizenship checks in Georgia

ATLANTA — The Justice Department has rejected Georgia's system of using Social Security numbers and driver's license data to check whether prospective voters are citizens, a process that was a subject of a federal lawsuit in the weeks leading up to November's election.

In a letter released on Monday, the Justice Department said the state's voter verification program is frequently inaccurate and has a "discriminatory effect" on minority voters. The decision means Georgia must halt the citizenship checks, although the state can still ask the Justice Department to reconsider, according to the letter and to the Georgia secretary of state's office.

"This flawed system frequently subjects a disproportionate number of African-American, Asian and/or Hispanic voters to additional, and more importantly, erroneous burdens on the right to register to vote," Loretta King, acting assistant attorney general of the Justice Department's civil rights division, said. King's letter was sent to Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker on Friday.

Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

That has been the mentality about it here.

They will frequently trot out an elderly person saying "they don't have a birth certificate so they can't vote" and on and on.

All the usual suspects are against it as well.

The state even amended the bill so that anyone who can't afford a state ID can get one free. They have done everything to accommodate the people complaining.

So how was this so-called flawed system implemented? The article never specified.

Were all people registering to vote subjected to the ID checks? or just minority groups?

Everyone is required to present a valid form of ID before they can vote.

Georgia does not actively try to suppress minority groups.

Man, don't you know? If you had skin that was a shade less then Ivory, you best had 3 forms of ID with you to even think bout votin!

Anyway, the bill was at everyone, you wanna vote.. just prove you're eligible to vote and registered.

But doing that really makes it hard for ACORN to work it's magic...

Georgia's major problem was that they didn't follow the law in regards to enacting these laws. They failed to submit for clearance the section 5 regulations and in failing to do so, violated the Voting Rights Act. It isn't a question of someone being too stupid to obtain proper ID, it's a case of politicians being ignorant about election law.

I would object to the satirical categorization of people who are not white as being too "stupid" when it comes to registering to vote and by implication, having the gall to file a lawsuit about it. Read on page 24 of the compaint, and you will see that a legal citizen who was told he needed to verify that he was a citizen did so, and even after doing so, received a letter stating that he would not be able to vote, even after providing adequate proof! "Mommy government" is needed in this instance as civil rights and voting are federal matters. If your state government egregiously wiped you off wrongly from the voter list and you took care of it, and they still refused to correct it, where should you turn?

Why is it even an issue to ask for ID and proof of citizenship to vote? Taht should be SOP for all states, and all voting.

Everytime something like that (here in Texas the Dems defeated such a proposal BTW) is brought up, we hear that Minorities can't handle showing ID.

Doesn't matter the merits of the case, it's always that minorities need government protection.

And THAT was what I was pokin fun at.

It's not clear to me how the system was "flawed," as alleged, but if it is, shouldn't the state be fixing that? I don't have a problem with verifying the citizenship status of every wannabe voter, as long as the system isn't flawed, and as long as it's applied to every voter, not just the ones who look like their name could be "Julio."

If you have to show a photo ID to buy a gun, you very certainly should also need to show a photo ID to vote.

Georgia should tell the Justice Department to go fornicate itself.
