Former Vice President Dick Cheney supports same-sex marriage, saying he prefers it when that right is given equally to all at the state level.

"'I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone,' Cheney said in a speech at the National Press Club. 'I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish.'"

This should come as no surprise to anyone, Cheney has a gay daughter. What is encouraging is that the Republican Party is becoming more overtly in favor of something that they are stereotypically thought to all be against.

Is this a sign that the GOP is going through major changes like we have seen in the past with political parties at various times in history? Are Republicans becoming more overtly Libertarian?

Kudos to him for publically stating that. My opinion of him just rose significantly(though admittedly still is not high).

I don't think Cheney speaks for the GOP (unfortunately), but it's nice to see a high profile repub supporting GM.

Too little, too late.

I just don't see the GOP going Libertarian especially at least not while the religious hardliners and extremists have sway witb the party. Yet if Limbaugh and/or Saun Vanity are secretly gay who knows. A friend says that they are. I don't know but he was right on other predictions !! Just to make it clear I am not accusing Saun and Limbaugh of gayness just an opinion by a friend.

Let's be serious if his daughter was not gay he would be advocating that gays be waterboarded until they are cured !!! sic !!!

Funny, he did last week.

The point is when I prominent Republican speaks out on this issue--saying in effect, I have gay daughter, I accept here and I wish her all the happiness, it forces some to rethink their view.
