Al Jazeera English - Middle East - Israel debates 'loyalty' law

Looks to me like a way to stifle perfectly legitimate dissent considering

[A] a one state solution has alot of good arguments going for it but by arguing for such a solution you are arguing against the existence of Israel as a Jewish state

The establishment of Isreal was, undeniably a disaster for the Arabs

But as Voltaire once said it is dangerous to be right when those in power are so very wrong

Its basicly fascism. To make it illegal to be critical of the state or parts of the state.

The Israeli parliament has passed a preliminary reading of a bill that would mandate the imprisonment of anyone who calls for the end of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, according to the Jerusalem Post newspaper.

Could some one explain "preliminary reading of a bill" please.

....

Does that mean that Jewish fringe group, Neturei Karta, who says Israel shouldn't exist because of their religious beliefs can be imprisoned? That seems to me awfully close to European laws on Holocaust denial. Basically stifling free speech as a whole.

Israel is a nation-state, and this law looks like an attempt to keep it that way.

Maybe instead of condemning it, Western nations should consider it. Our cultural identities are just as at risk.

I disagree. I think it's an attempt to stifle any kind of political dissidence with ambiguous language like the kind used in the Patriot Act in America. Words that don't mean much until they need to be used. Of course we'd have to see the legislation before deciding but I doubt Israel will make it clear what it means. Somebody simply saying that Israel shouldn't exist is not grounds for imprisonment unless they take actions toward making that a reality.

al Jazeera wrote a negative article about Jews :2wave:

Ignoring the nefarious demonizing by the Jew lovers who wrote the article.......

If you advocate publicly the overthrow or destruction of the United States in the USA you will be arrested as well.
Hell if you deny the 6 million Jews/or 8 million 'others' got gassed in WWII you'll be arrested in Europe.

What this is is a Jew hating publication trying to demonize Jews by removing common sense from readers minds so they will accept and demonize nefarious malicious and evil JEWS!
Der Sturmer was alot more honest.

Speaking out against the very existence of a nation is a real threat-- if not of violence, of the dissolution of social order. It should be treated as a threat.

Can we get a source on this OTHER than Al-jazeera? I don't consider them exactly "objective".

Well the first thing I saw in Aljazzera english was an interview with a Kurdish women who belived golden statues of George Bush and Tony Blair should be erected in Iraqi cities. If anything its probably one of the less biased stations out there. I did a search on google news for this story [expecting the envitable fuss RE Aljazzera] but the other storys that came up didnt go into a great deal of detail, though theres nothing stopping you from doing the same.

With this law it would be illegal and you would got to jail for 1 year at least. Problem is where does it stop? What is next? All Israeli-Palestinians need to wear a yellow crescent so they are easier to identify? Or are they just gonna kick them out?

I think that Al-Jazeera is quite objective. I watch it regularly in Arabic and they often invite Israeli politicians and intellectuals to express their opinions.
This afternoon they had a long interview with the military expert of the Jerusalem Post.

You can watch it in English and decide for yourself. I find it to be much more objective than Fox News.

Just my 2 Shekels.

I believe this is an ultimate attempt to criminalize Hamas once and for all. This will create the environment for Israel to negotiate a peace settlement while going after Hamas. This gives them the out for recognizing Hamas's legitmacy as an elected party.

Leaving the slander aside for a minute you can argue against a states existence without calling for its armed overthrow. Otherwise http://www.debatepolitics.com/immigration/48303-megamerge-dissolution-solution.html Would be illegal. As would Anarcism Trotskyism etc.

Just a shame they have to criminalise the commemoration of Nakba Day in the process.

Christ the head of the Al-Jazeera Beirut office praised Samir Kuntar as a "pan-Arab hero".

FYI Kuntar crushed the skull of an Israeli 4 year old girl with his rifle butt.

"Objective" indeed.

The actions of Palestinians result in my lack of empathy over this.

I might have an issue with such a loyalty law, but when you go around bombing school buses and decapitating people...well I just don't feel anything for you.

A source is declared objective by how much it suits your bias.

What? Are you crazy? What do you think we are, Europeans?

And by the way, that law didn't even pass the first vote in the Knesset yesterday, so it's finished.

Kuntar was received as a hero in Lebanon because he spent almost 2 decades in an Israeli prison, not because of his horrible crime. I'm in no way justifying his horrid crime and sad to realise that we've come to this.

I make sure not to stick to only one news source and compare several. I still find Al-Jazeera quite objective compared to Fox News.

Every media outlet follows a certain political line and not one of them is 100% objective. All I'm saying is that Al-Jazeera is not the voice of Hamas or Hizbollah as some would like to believe. It gives a chance to people from different political backgrounds to express their views, including Israeli views. I'd like to see Fox News do the same.

Um he was sent to prison for his horrible crime? How does murdering a 4 year old and getting sent to prison for 20 years make one a hero?

I have never heard any other major news outlet honor a child murderer as a hero.

That should not make one a hero, but things have gone so bad that any prisoner is received as a hero regardless of what he's done. When the IDF was bombarding Gaza, news was out that most of the civilian victims were children, but Israelis were still standing on the outskirts of Gaza and cheering the IDF.

I have never heard any other major news outlet honor a child murderer as a hero.

I have

Is that supposed to be some sort of an excuse, Mira?
Was Kuntar truly received as a hero in Lebanon because he spent a lot of time in Israeli prison, for murdering Israeli civilians, or was it just because he murdered Israeli civilians?
It's hard to face the truth isn't it?

The Al Jazeera television station admitted Wednesday that its coverage of Israel's release of convicted Lebanese terrorist Samir Kuntar violated the station's own code of ethics. The admission came in response to a threat by Israel's Government Press Office to boycott the satellite channel unless it apologized.

In an official letter, a copy of which was obtained by Haaretz, Al Jazeera's general director, Khanfar Wadah, wrote that "elements of the program" broadcast in Kuntar's honor on the night of Saturday, July 19, "violated [the station's] Code of Ethics," and he "regards these violations as very serious."
