The White House refused to say how much the trip was costing taxpayers.

Even before the Obamas left Washington, the there-and-back trip drew criticism from Republicans. They questioned the president's decision to travel to New York for a night of entertainment during a recession and while automakers struggle to survive.

It was just a few months ago that auto executives were roundly criticized when they traveled to Washington for congressional hearings in pricey private planes.

Oh I was hoping someone would bring this up. First let agree that when Mr. Bush was in office we never had the finacial problems we are facing now.

Second do you know how many time he actually over a eight year period went to the Ranch.

Finally as reported in the Op piece if he want to go out on the town he could have done it in DC and not look so hypocritical.

You know, I don't like Obama... but hail everybody needs a night on the town sometimes.

When the President goes anywhere but the bathroom, its going to cost. It's not like him and the Missus can just jump in the Suburban and run down to Manhatten for dinner and whatever.... the Secret Service will insist on official vehicles, and advance prep team, extensive armed escorts, etc.

If he was doing it every Saturday night, okay I could see beeching about the cost to taxpayers. Once in a while though, I don't see anything to beech about.

I have no problem with him going out but to fly up to NYC for dinner and a show please he could have done that in DC if you go and read the article you will noted that this was discussed in said article.

Hm, Scorp does kinda have a point there. Bigtime corporate execs have private jets because their time is extremely valuable...they're pretty much "on the clock" all the time, by cell phone if nothing else. The criticism they got about using the jets was probably unfair.

And c'mon Cap, bringing up the fact that Dubya was reading to some kids when 9/11 happened is a little silly.
