Will China Finally Act Against NK?

China May Test North Korea Sway After Nuclear Test - Yahoo! News

It appears that China has finally become jaded with Kim Jong-Il's ways and will finally place real pressure on North Korea.

I hope they do rein him in. But make no mistake...they are not "jaded" with him. His little nuclear temper tantrum has served its purpose, and now China gets to boost its stature on the world stage by restraining their errant client.

Kim will do more sabre rattling....and China will allow it whenever it suits Beijing to do so.

China acting on North Korea would be just as unlikely as the United States acting on Israel.

North Korea may do some things China disagrees with, but there's still going to be weapon trading, with an overtone of "now don't go poke your eye out".

I agree, but China cannot allow the region to become comprimised my U.S. and other forces due to open conflict. China does not want the U.S. operating in this area at all and if an American ship stops one of the NK's, and there is an attack, it may all lead to problems for China.

I do believe there is already a large amount of American military presence in that region.

However the American military can strike any habitable section on this globe within minutes. Our air-superiority, globally, does not make it necessary to build up a border-force to have Pyongyang screaming.

I think it will take a true nuclear launch or the prospect of a nuclear armed Japan/Taiwan to sway them into any real action.

We still have our bases in Japan, but South Korea has pressed for military down-sizing of U.S. forces in the country. They claim that they deal with similar crime problems with U.S. soldiers as Japan has. Also, in the dealings with NK and the sunshine policy SK asked for slight withdrawl, though we still have some forces there.

You are right though we can strike from anywhere. It is just our direct presence that China dislikes.

Re: Will China Finally Act Against NK?

I hope China does do something on the NK front, and I wouldn't be surprised if they did either. An asian arms race is clearly not in China's best interests. Additionally, while I am certain they would back NK if NK actually did anything, entering open conflict with the US is also clearly not in China's interests. Unless NK's current actions are the result of explicit requests by the Chinese (something I highly doubt), it's just a question of how far China allows NK to go before it decides that NK is pulling China to close to unwanted conflict

A few months back Israel asked the Bush for the green light to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities. Bush refused, and Israel backed down. Such a scenario is how I think a Chinese-NK exchange would go. I agree that China actually striking out against Korea is extremely unlikely, though. It's less "will china act against NK" and more "will china stop allowing NK to act"
