Abu Ghraib abuse photos 'show rape'

At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee.

Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.

Another apparently shows a female prisoner having her clothing forcibly removed to expose her breasts.

Detail of the content emerged from Major General Antonio Taguba, the former army officer who conducted an inquiry into the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq.

Allegations of rape and abuse were included in his 2004 report but the fact there were photographs was never revealed. He has now confirmed their existence in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

The graphic nature of some of the images may explain the US President’s attempts to block the release of an estimated 2,000 photographs from prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan despite an earlier promise to allow them to be published.
“The mere description of these pictures is horrendous enough, take my word for it.”

Well .... no wonder why Obama wants to stop the photos coming out ... But you still gotta release them at some point. Rather sooner than later.

I'd prefer to operate on Obama and the military's timetable here, as i'm sure those photos will be released eventually. Besides, if releasing these photos now means more American soldiers and civilians coming home in body bags, then count me out. We know what has happened at Abu Graib, and those rogue soldiers found to be responsible were court martialed and had their butts thrown into federal prison where they belong.

I supported President Bush back in '06 when he refused to release some newer photos in the interest of national security. Now I support Obama's decision, too. As Americans, let's be content to wait a bit longer. Our brave men and women in the miltary deserve it.

I think releasing them would have had a positive effect if it would have been done as a gesture of denouncing these crimes. What could have been a more powerful message than hearing the American President say "I'm not closing my eyes, not looking the other way, I know what happened and will make sure that it will not happen again".

They already know what has happened and what is happening daily inside and outside of the prisons. They have the live graphics right in front of their eyes, pictures won't add anything.

Re: Abu Ghraib abuse photos 'show rape'

As a nation, we are disintegrating. Every night we can all go to prison as MSNBC shows countless hours of reality drama in shows like "Lock up." We legalized torture, and of course it took the form of rape, sexual sodomy, and sadism. When the current president with his fake smile and fake optomism saw the truth of the photographs, he burried it. We redefine waterboarding as "enhanced" interogation techniques. And all that on top of the fact that our wasteful, sinful, plunge into excess and debt has destroyed our economy.

You think I'm wrong? Let me ask you this: how far in the future are you able to look? Don't you find it shortening. I can't look down the road three months without it all becoming hazy and uncertain. Don't you feel like, "sh.., anything might happen." That's disintegration.

Unless that is, you believe Obama. He said we've come back from the brink of economic ruin. He said his administration did it, but that we can't rest on our laurels. Healthcare has to be fixed, education, etc. He says all this and in a couple of days GM will be bankrupt, our money is becoming worthless paper, everyone's retirement is wiped out and millions are out of work over the last six months. The stock market rises and falls for no reason at all. It's even being said that the age old, "buy and hold" strategy is a failed one. People now have to buy and sell into highs and lows quite actively to secure their future--that's called a casino.

Can you really see four full years of Barak Obama? Can you imagine the psychological torture of four years of phoney optimism in the face of a declining nation? The band is playing and the Titanic is sinking.

What we need as a country isn't really the release of the pictures, but the very determined prosecution of all who are responsible for the abuse all the way up the chain of command.

Assuming it is released any time soon fair enough.
I have little reason to not think this occured, didn't other horrific activities occur in Abu Gharib to humilate the prisoners? Rape is the ultimate tool for that.

The pictures will not show those responsible for the decision to mistreat prisoners, yet the public will demand prosecution of those in the pictures. The right will promote the release of the pictures to direct attention from those actually responsible. We have enough evidence of wrongdoing to begin prosecution of those who ordered torture, the photographs are not necessary.

If the photos do show rape then they should not be released at all, ever.

The victims of those attacks should not have their pain put on public display to simply satisfy other people's political agenda.

    Absolutely not.

Or the current government can go by way of convincing it's public to believe that the rapes were essential in order to get pertinent information that saved American lives.

You know, they’re standing there with no clothes. ‘Is everybody OK?’ And you see these incredible looking women, and so I sort of get away with things like that.”
