Abu Ghraib abuse photos 'show rape'

Iif releasing these photos now means more American soldiers and civilians coming home in body bags, then count me out.

It is a sort of damned if you, damned if you don't situation though. Odds are high enough that the countries whos people are in these pictures already know, and are pissed off about that as it is, the refusal to release these photos will probably make it just as bad as if they released the photos.

To be honest, I find the best commentators on this subject to be our military personnel, who fully understand the longterm ramifications of this issue. I trust them to handle it.

Obama is saying soldiers lives and coalition will be put in danger. The last time the photos was released without warning of it's content, it didn't exactly kill hundreds soldiers or did anything in particular did it?

I don't think people can stomach the photos but tucking it away won't make a difference. I'd rather let it be in public domain and know that those behind it will be in jail for a damn long time, this will just drag out.

Thing is, it's a difficult thing to prove.

A good investigator with the full support and authority of the Pentagon and Congress could prove it if it in fact happened.

My grandmother used to say the exact same thing back in the 60's.

Funny.

:2wave:

But I'm only 44 and I'm saying it. Eventually, 20 somethings will be saying it.

Hell in a handbasket. It's a peculiar inclination of those over 50 to long for better days in their past and view the past through rose-colored glasses.

In no way do I long for the days of firehosing black people, forced segregation, lack of rights for women, and the like. It's a myth that the olden days were better days.

TODAY is the best day, because there is still an opportunity for change.

I don't long for the past. I want a future. The problem is, we never seem to get out of the past. We trade the Colleseum for abortion. We trade lynching for torture. We trade the Tower of London for Guantanamo. We replace firehosing with waterboarding. And all along the idiot crowds shout from the right and the left never coming to understand they keep the whole process rolling along.

Democracy no longer exists. The reflection in the mirror remains but it's just a ghost. If things have gotten so complicated that they can't be understood, if we can't tell the difference between torture and interogation, if we can't understand the tax code, if we can't get an expert opinion that isn't put up right along side an expert with the opposite opinion, then democracy has simply starved. You think you have a political voice, but everytime you go to the poll you're forced to vote for the "lesser of two evils" as if there were such a thing. Bush tortures, Obama and Pelosi cover it up. What's a citizen to do?

Exactly.
But it's alot better imo to get everything in the open, punish those behind it without fail and allow those to vent their anger.

The Iraqis and Aghans have spoken about abuse and complained about mistreatment by American and British soldiers for a LONG time. This will make no difference, all it will do is enlighten the western world in what occurs behind closed doors with some of our soldiers.
If we can stomach war, we should be able to handle the consequences of it.

Or the current government can go by way of convincing it's public to believe that the rapes were essential in order to get pertinent information that saved American lives.

Obama supporting rape? I wouldn't be surprised.

I wonder if Obama would let us punish terrorists with a baby?

You don't consider that our troops had a much more difficult job? I'm sorry, I think you're simply mistaken here (albeit extremely well-intentioned). I sympathize, the decision to torture MUST be punished.

The problem here is that there are no longer standards that have to be met to get into the military. People now get in with felony records, drug use, and mental problems. This should not be. We need to go back to setting entrance standards for the military that are stricter. Meanwhile, the soldier who raped that kid should be court marshaled and sent before a firing squad.

Seriously? Why hire such people to begin with? Does US have a shortage of volunteers or something?

Nah, too nice.

I say we drop the rapists in Iraq and allow the kid to hunt him. If he reaches the border, he is safe. If he's caught ... well, he won't be sleeping easy.

I watch way too many movies. lmao

Speaking as a former Navy vet who did a tour in recruiting (albeit some 20 years ago), I can say with a high degree of certainty that military entrance standards are still relatively high for most highly skilled professions. Granted, recruiting has gotten tougher since post-9/11, but that doesn't necessarily mean that recruiting standards have dropped off. Just means that it's harder to find highly qualified and motivated "volunteers". Nonetheless, based on my experience in both recruiting and my veteran status I'd like to believe our Armed Services are still seeking out "the best of the best". That doesn't mean, however, that from time to time we won't get a rotten egg in the bunch. And sometimes, serving in the military does the rebel rouser some good.

Case and point, I once served with a 1st Class Petty Officer (Navy) who was a trouble maker as a teen. He went before the judge who gave him a choice: 4 yrs jail or four years military. He chose to enlist and stayed for 22 yrs until he retired. Received numerous awards to include three Navy Commendation Medal, two Navy Achievement Medals and 4 Good Conduct Awards (one each for every four years faithful and honorable service). He just needed some direction in his life and happened to find it in the Navy. Doesn't always work out that way, but it's not like our local judicial system hasn't gone this route before. Lots of our combat vets from the Viet Nam era were plucked from the juvenile penal system and made an offer they couldn't refuse to serve their country - most did very well for themselves.

Mind you, I'm not an advocate for that form of recruitement, but if I were given that same choice - jail or military service be it in peace or war time - I'd likely take the military option, too. Roam free and get paid -vs- incarseration making license plates or big rocks into small ones...Hmmm...

I think I'd rather do a 2-4 yr stint serving Uncle Sam.

I gotta say if you just go to google.com and click on the image tab and type in "Iraqi prisoner abuse" you see some pretty nasty crap. Guys posing over a slashed prisoners throat with a big thumbs up. Guys covered in **** as punishment.

Then if you dig through enough links instead of the picture section eventually you come across a girl screaming as men in uniforms hold her down and shove something in her mouth.... Guys with objects being shoved in their butts... How the **** could our country be doing this? I think the fact that Obama wants to hide the pictures is going to anger and rouse more "terrorists" than the pictures themselves if they ever sneak out mainstream.

this was proven to be faked. As were many of those things you are refering too.

Abu Ghraib abuse photos 'show rape' - Telegraph

Well .... no wonder why Obama wants to stop the photos coming out ... But you still gotta release them at some point. Rather sooner than later.

Unfortunately the world isn't made up of perfect people, and this is a war situation which makes people even nuttier than they normally would be.

I see no need to air our dirty laundry. Acknowledge it and move on.

Our acknowledging it is a gazillion steps ahead of our enemies.

So are these photos showing people who have not been convicted for what happened at Abu Ghraib? Or are these photos of activities already punished?

I do not believe that any one was convicted of rape from the Abu Ghraid cases, and if this story turns out to be accurate(this is a big if), then those involved should be tried specifically for rape.

For me this whole thing is wait and see. I have no proof, no real evidence outside one news story this happened. I want it to not be true. I am not going to get worked up about it till there is some confirmation.

Oh my bad. I didn't realise that these where fake... Images are censored but still a bit graphic.

Photos Show Rape of Iraqi Women - Vox

These have been proven faked?

I find it interesting that the blog you linked refers to a news story on CBS, but does not contain a link TO THE STORY.

Interesting meaning highly suspicious.

For the record, I don't consider blogs OR La Voce De La Aztlan to be a credible source deserving of serious attention.

You realize that La Voce De La Aztlan is a far leftist publication that advocates for the reconquista, right?
