North Korea Announces They Are No Longer Bound by the Armistice With South Korea

North Korea threatened to attack South Korea one day after Seoul announced that it would join a U.S.-led naval exercise, aimed at intercepting any shipments suspected of carrying materials used in the making of weapons of mass destruction.

North Korean media reported that Pyongyang is feeling "compelled to take a decisive measure" and will mete out "unimaginable and merciless punishment" to any country that will blockade its ships. It warned the international community that it would not hesitate to use its "tremendous military muscle" against any threats.

The government also proclaimed that the North would no longer honor the North-South armistice signed at the end of the Korean War.

It masy be time to add another name to the list of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and that name is "Pyongyang". !!!! I am not joking it may be time to fry some North Korean noodles !!!!

Didn't MacArthur suggest something along these lines 50+ years ago?

Don't you remember what happened in the last Korean War?

China flooded the battle zones with Chinese troops and we pulled out.

If there is another war it will go global instantly.

I agree with this. China could easily rein in NK right now if they wanted to. I'm not really sure why China isn't doing more to keep them in check though.

Because we are doing BS in other areas and they have no respect for us

I'm not sure either. It seems like China would be very reluctant to let something happen that would draw us into another war and possibly further devalue our debt that they own when economic backlash happens...

Because leaving North Korea as a loose cannon poses little threat to China-- and it helps keep us in check. China's not interested in being a military superpower, but North Korea's existence gives them economic and diplomatic leverage against us that allows them to continue developing into an economic superpower.

Attempting to engage North Korea directly, or even provide substantial aid to South Korea, would be economic suicide for the United States. Look at the budget deficits that are predicted with two wars, and imagine what would happen if we started a third.

I'd be laughing my ass off, if I thought I had enough resources to survive another Great Depression.

They trust that we are smarter than that. I fear they underestimate the raw self-destructive capacity of democracy.

We haven't even come close to bottom out yet with this soon to be great depression.

Or just human nature in general. I have thought to myself, many times now, that since the government basically owns a couple auto manufacturers, we may as well refit the factories to build tanks and throw ourselves into just building a war machine to drive our economy through the global crisis.

Heh, actually Macarthur suggested that the best way to end the Korean War was to drop a few hundred nuclear bombs on China.

If there was another war in North Korea, I think a Chinese invasion might actually be a good thing. It doesn't mean that China would go to war with the United States...rather, that they were "helping" occupy the country like the Americans and Soviets split up Germany. If China invaded from the north, and South Korea and the United States invaded from the south, it would probably make things much easier.

I think a Chinese-run North Korea would be infinitely superior to a collapsing totalitarian state with stray nukes.

So you don't think the Chinese troops will be shooting at us and would be there just to stake some claims on land?

I've heard the reasoning that China doesn't want to put too much pressure on NK in the form of threatening to pull off support out of fear that there will be a total collapse in government and China doesn't want to deal with the refugee problem that would follow as people would try to leave for China. Also heard that it's possible that this sabra rattling is a sign of an internal power switch as well... Aah, I don't know myself. The refugee thing sounds plausible I suppose, though I figure China would have means to deal with it.

No, not unless we did something to majorly piss them off. Why would they?

China doesn't have any claims to North Korean land that I'm aware of, and isn't really an expansionist power aside from a few relatively minor territorial disputes. If you're asking if I think China might annex North Korea, I think that is highly unlikely (and would hardly be a geopolitical tragedy even if it did). North Korea is a national embarrassment to China and Kim Jong-il does not take orders from China anymore. If there was a war, I think China would take away their nukes and set up a puppet government...which would actually be a pretty good outcome IMO. Alternatively, China might take away their nukes and occupy North Korea for a few years, then turn it over to the South Koreans...which would also be a pretty good outcome.

You don't think that China see's it as an expansion on Democracy and if we had the balls we would do it to China too?

You serious think China gives a damn about "democracy", either to support it or oppose it? China's not interested in the spread of democracy; they are interested in the spread of Chinese economic influence, and the promotion of Chinese national interests around the globe.

Democracy has EVERYTHING to do with China's perception as to our motives.

We brag about every country we turn into a democracy after we invade it and overthrow their government.

China may perceive our attacks on EVERY communist dictator as a direct relation to a threat to their communist dictators.

Why do we need 3 threads on this?
Ignore two of them. There, problem solved. Wasn't that easy.

Tomorrows lesson will be How to ignore threads that piss you off because they say something derogatory about something Prez Doofus has done. Be sure to do your homework.

Well, if China doesn't aid N. Korea in it's struggle, then inevitably, it will still have a surge of refugees entering the country anyway. There's no 2-ways about it for China. Interfere with the N. Korea Government, and fear it may collapse, bringing in thousands, if not millions of refugees, don't interfere, don't aid, and have N. Korea lose, and millions of refugees into China.

Neither is any good for China.

My guess is that if there's going to be a military conflict, China will supply the 3 crucial F's in war. Food, Fuel, and Firearms to the North, but at the same time not being in the war.
