Attempting to engage North Korea directly, or even provide substantial aid to South Korea, would be economic suicide for the United States. Look at the budget deficits that are predicted with two wars, and imagine what would happen if we started a third.

I'd be laughing my ass off, if I thought I had enough resources to survive another Great Depression.
We haven't even come close to bottom out yet with this soon to be great depression.

Or just human nature in general. I have thought to myself, many times now, that since the government basically owns a couple auto manufacturers, we may as well refit the factories to build tanks and throw ourselves into just building a war machine to drive our economy through the global crisis.

Heh, actually Macarthur suggested that the best way to end the Korean War was to drop a few hundred nuclear bombs on China.

    I can't. This is important.

If there was another war in North Korea, I think a Chinese invasion might actually be a good thing. It doesn't mean that China would go to war with the United States...rather, that they were "helping" occupy the country like the Americans and Soviets split up Germany. If China invaded from the north, and South Korea and the United States invaded from the south, it would probably make things much easier.

I think a Chinese-run North Korea would be infinitely superior to a collapsing totalitarian state with stray nukes.

So you don't think the Chinese troops will be shooting at us and would be there just to stake some claims on land?

I've heard the reasoning that China doesn't want to put too much pressure on NK in the form of threatening to pull off support out of fear that there will be a total collapse in government and China doesn't want to deal with the refugee problem that would follow as people would try to leave for China. Also heard that it's possible that this sabra rattling is a sign of an internal power switch as well... Aah, I don't know myself. The refugee thing sounds plausible I suppose, though I figure China would have means to deal with it.
...we honor leaders for what they achieve, but we often prefer to close our eyes to the way they achieve it...

In the real world, politics is compromise and democracy is politics. Anyone who would be a statesman has to be a successful politician first. Also, a leader has to deal with people and nations as they are, not as they should be. As a result, the qualities required for leadership are not necessary those that we would want our children to emulate - unless we wanted them to be leaders.

Why do we need 3 threads on this?

No, not unless we did something to majorly piss them off. Why would they?

China doesn't have any claims to North Korean land that I'm aware of, and isn't really an expansionist power aside from a few relatively minor territorial disputes. If you're asking if I think China might annex North Korea, I think that is highly unlikely (and would hardly be a geopolitical tragedy even if it did). North Korea is a national embarrassment to China and Kim Jong-il does not take orders from China anymore. If there was a war, I think China would take away their nukes and set up a puppet government...which would actually be a pretty good outcome IMO. Alternatively, China might take away their nukes and occupy North Korea for a few years, then turn it over to the South Koreans...which would also be a pretty good outcome.

You don't think that China see's it as an expansion on Democracy and if we had the balls we would do it to China too?

You serious think China gives a damn about "democracy", either to support it or oppose it? China's not interested in the spread of democracy; they are interested in the spread of Chinese economic influence, and the promotion of Chinese national interests around the globe.
