This was my biggest worry about Obama (to be honest, McCain as well). I don't think I'd ever be happy with any nominee he puts into the SCotUS. I guess we have to wait and see what Congress does here, but I would hope we can maybe ferret out a bit better candidate.

Merit is a concept completely alien to you isn't it?

Race and gender are (or should be) completely incidental, and when they happen to help a politician of course that politician is going to pander...that's what politicians do.

That's not the case with you and a couple others on this thread, though. Race and gender are your FIRST concerns.

Re: Conservative groups criticize Sotomayor pick

Of course the right is against her. Par for the course and expected. Most unbiased commentators have said she is a good candidate remianing centrist on most issues. If the court did not from time to time make leaps forward segregation would still exist, does the right advocate going back that far?

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama named federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice on Tuesday, praising her as "an inspiring woman" with both the intellect and compassion to interpret the Constitution wisely.
Obama said Sotomayor has more experience as a judge than any current member of the high court had when nominated, adding she has earned the "respect of colleagues on the bench," the admiration of lawyers who appear in her court and "the adoration of her clerks."

Is it ever a good idea to have activist judges on the court? I wonder.

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,"

What was she referring to when she made that statement?

He's considered white because his decedents are from Europe.

Empathy and a sense of what laws translate into for people. The sense is that wealthy white men have no idea what the consequences of their judgments are on those of other races and economic status.

Unless she was referring to what a Latina Female should wear to a party, does it matter?

Also her comments, on video for all the world to see: "The court of Appeals, this is where Policy is made... oh wait I shouldn't say that...."

Where in her comments does the Constitution come into play? I've yet to read her commenting on that. A lot about her, her ethnicity, her gender... but nothing about the Constitution.

She's a centrist if you're to the left of Obama maybe.
