North Korea conducts nuclear test

And then he's regime would be forcibly removed from power.

By who? China? Not bloody likely.

The US? Ah, screw that, the South Koreans were demanding the US leave their little pisspot of a country when their skater was disqualified for cheating in the final speed skating event. Cold War's over, I keep hearing, so I can't see why we should be bothered with that little squabble any more.

Besides, my ex-fiancee from long long ago says her Tiburon is a crap car so it would serve S. Korea right.

Since WW2, nobody has managed to perform any major land grabs, and there have been no big wars between real powers. That is pretty damn impressive. The world is probably more peaceful today than it ever has been since humans started civilization.

Thanks to the United States and our nuclear deterrent.

And only to that.

Re: Nrth Korea confirms nuclear bomb test

Wrong, so far Obama hasn't released any comment.

Yeah, I hear The Messiah is a lawyer well versed in the art of perfectly pointless quibbling, too.

That's why his tenure is going to be one of the worst we've seen in a long long time.

The administration is far from speechless.

I know what it is then, the Teleprompter Operators Functional Union (TOFU) doesn't allow any teleprompter work on weekends.

Maybe the administration IS speechless, and has to wait for the speechwriters to write up a speech and for that speech to be turned into TOFU before it can be fed to the gullible TOFU swilling public. And I don't do TOFU, so I just haven't heard about it yet.

And then he's regime would be forcibly removed from power. The last thing it wants. People have these notions that states like North Korea and Iran will act in a manner that results in their regimes' end despite years of doing everything they can to stay in power.

If they're backed into a corner with no way out, I can see it as a possibility. North Korea is dying, and it wouldn't surprise me to see them invade the south in a last ditch attempt at forceful reunification. I'm not talking about a thought out, rational decision by Kim Jong Il. I'm talking about the last ditch actions of a nation in its death throes.

And who pray tell, would remove them from power? The United States under the administration of President Obama, who has assured us that small counties are no threat? I hardly think so.

No, you are seeing the first fruits of our abandonment of asstertiveness on the global stage.

The following stages promise to be even more dramatic.

Saddam Hussein did everything he could to stay in power, including running the Mother of All Bluffs about weapons of mass destruction...which resulted in him getting his neck stretched.

Governments will generally act to preserve and enlarge their power. What is far from certain, however, is which choices will accomplish that and which choices will accomplish their demise.

The concern should be less that North Korea will behave irrationally and more that North Korea will behave rationally but erroneously.
Saddam Hussein faced a determined and assertive United States. That is not the case for the regime in North Korea. Barring action from China, or Russia, they are as safe and secure as a babe in its mother's arms.

They may even win concessions and aid (tribute) from this exercise.

It's a damn shame we have to continue to put up with this loon. His people starve to death while he fulfill his dreams of glory.

They may.

Truth be told, however, is that some form of aid is what's needed in North Korea. It's a country that has lost its ability to feed its own people. As Moon already pointed out, it is a dying country. At some point, the world either finds a way to feed the North Koreans or deal with a mass of refugees at the 38th parallel and the Yalu River.

The complicating factor is not so much North Korea's nuclear weapons, but the cult of personality surrounding Kim himself. I have read of speculation by some that the North Korean government would likely keep his death a secret should he have another stroke and die. As long as that cult prevails--as long as Kim has the loyalty of the military, basically--North Korea will prefer nuclear posturing and bellicose rhetoric over engaging the rest of the world in resolving its internal problems.

The dilemma that creates is that any saber rattling on our part merely feeds into that cult and strengthens Kim's control over North Korea.

Personally, what I would do is have the CIA mock up some aircraft with chinese markings and do a couple low-level flights over Pyongyang dropping food packets stamped with something like "a gift from the People's Republic of China and the United States of America to the great people of North Korea." Don't strike at North Korea, strike at Kim and his cult of personality. Undermine his image with the North Koreans.

Sadly though, the United States cannot in good conscience instruct anyone on the evils of personality cults, not anymore.

We have elected a cult figure to the Presidency, who would not have been hired to run a discount shoe store.

The only ones who have made Obama a cult figure is conservatives. Now that is sad I agree.

Who gives a damn about "instructing" anyone? I'm not suggesting we go to the North Koreans sounding like Mr Rogers and saying "won't you be my neighbor?" I'm suggesting we find ways to give the North Korean people the opportunity to choose between a full belly and Kim's insanity. If that means toppling Kim and accepting some other dictator in his place, I'm ok with that.

The goal is (or should be) a de-nuclearized North Korea. A democratic North Korea would be a bonus, but that's all.

Ya'll are all missing the big picture here.

2006, NK fires a squib shot nuclear test. This was in reaction to the US stance towards the country at the time. We reacted strongly and got NK to shut it's program down. Obama comes along and they decided to test him, so they fired that long ranged missile. Our response was weak.. nothing really happened. So they said "We're starting back up the Nuclear program" and now they've figured out how to do a crude A-bomb.

This was to get our attention.

They have not proven they can actually deliver the device, but NK, while rather insane, is not a country of suicidal maniacs. This was more to get "respect" and concessions from the US and others. No the real fear here, that they are working with, as they have in the past, Iran, and Iran is using NK to cover for it's own nuclear program.

Countries with nukes are safe from US invasions. More power to 'em ;)

Re: Nrth Korea confirms nuclear bomb test

Resign.

You asked for it, don't cry about it.

Funny. What would you like them to do about NORTH KOREA?

If you don't have any foreign policy suggestions, and you just want to whine whenever another nation does something that isn't in America's interests, then I suggest you STFU. Kthxbai. :2wave:

wtf?

Dude, you can think Obama has ****ty ideas all you want, but he's obviously an incredibly brilliant guy. It's not like before he was elected he was an unemployed layabout.

North Korea conducts nuclear test | U.S. | Reuters

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said it successfully conducted a nuclear test on Monday, a move certain to further isolate the impoverished state which argues it has no choice but to build an atomic arsenal to protect itself in a hostile world.

"(North Korea) successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of the measures to bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defense in every way," the North's official KCNA news agency said.

No time to really comment. North Korea did register a 4.7 magnitude event according to the USGS. So I take that it was a successful test, any estimates on the yield?

10-degree Map Centered at 40°N,130°E

Predictions of President Obama's reaction?

Here, let me attempt to describe the SERIOUS way in which this feckless inexperienced Community Organization of the United States along with the feckless and nearly USELESS United Community Organization Nations will respond:

"YOU BETTER STOP IT YOU MEANIES OR THIS TIME WE REALLY, REALLY, REALLY MEANT IT!!!" (Caveat: However, we will not use military force anymore and do not torture so anything you do will not have any ramifications or result in serious attempts to rein you in; we're going to beat you with a higher morality than you have ever seen before! Take that you despot you! )

NOBODY messes with the Community Organization of the UNited States unless they want to get beat with our higher moral gound. YES!

This of course will send waves of fear running down the spines of despots and dictators the world over and cause them to shake in their jack booted booties.

:rofl

Re: Nrth Korea confirms nuclear bomb test

In a stunning foreign policy victory for the Obama Administration, North Korea announced, shortly after the USGS reported a 4.7 magnitude disturbance, a successful underground nuclear test.

So far, the Obama administration is speechless.

This one is priceless; bravo! :rofl

Loud angry statements and requests for North Korea to return to the table.

At this point, Obama has the same options as Bush did and all of the suck.

Well, in truth, there are NO options because of the way the Liberals all over the world and in the US have treated Bush and his administration for actually doing something about Afghanistan and Iraq.

The writing on the wall as stated by Osama Bin Laden is this; the Western Nations have no stomach for war and will run away if they suffer even the most moderate of casualties.

The actions of the Liberal Democrats and Liberals all over the world will once more come back to haunt them.

Had the world stood behind Bush and his Administration and we as a nation had staunchly supported the efforts our politicians VOTED for; the actions of Iran, Syria and North Korea would be very different.

But alas, we have all but criminalized Bush for being a man of action and decision and clearly told the world that we will NEVER be able to send troops anywhere in the world nor will we torture their combatants for any information that could save lives; they will all get constitutional protections.

Yes you are indeed right Obvious; NOTHING will and CAN be done because the whiney wimpy spoiled brats of today’s world know NOTHING of history or what REAL sacrifice is and will willingly give up their freedoms and morals for peaceful submission to their enemies.

Yes, but only after perhaps 100,000's of lives are lost; what a GREAT policy!

The only ones who have made Obama a cult figure is conservatives. Now that is sad I agree.

Gee, here I thought it was the mainstream Liberal media who did that; but then, this is another of your "because you say so's."

I am always amused how with Liberals like you it is either Bush or the Conservatives who are always to blame; it is trite and amusing, but you would think that at some point you could parrot a new Leftist talking point; this one after all is very OLD.
