75% Have Favorable Opinion of U.S. Military This Memorial Day

As the nation prepares to celebrate Memorial Day honoring those who lost their lives in military service, 75% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the U.S. military.

Only 11% view the military unfavorably, and 14% are undecided in a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

These figures are virtually unchanged from last year.

I was pretty happy to see the results of this poll. Naturally, I wish the numbers were higher. I think it's important to remember those who have lost their lives in the service of our nation's military.

I find the fact that 11 % view the military unfavorably disturbing, but I guess there are always a few loonies on the fringe of society.

11% can be conscientious objectors, believers in nonviolence, and pacifism. I find nothing wrong with people staying true to there morals, despite how "disturbing" and loony you believe these people may be.

I respect all three of those groups, but think that the military itself is not at fault for any violent situations they are used in(not phrased well, but hopefully you understand what I am saying). The military is tasked with enacting policy, and do that very well.

I guess I just don't understand, but that is nothing new.

Just to make a point, "The Military", isn't a monolithic object. There are many components.

The various branches, Army Navy Airforce Marines.
The individual soldiers, sailors and airmen.
Officers.
Noncoms.
Enlisted.
Combat arms or Support.
The Pentagon.
The military bureaucracy.
The UCMJ and related mechanisms.
The procurement system.
Civilian contractors employed in quasi-military roles.

Some might also subdivide out,
Current missions, deployments and theaters.
Political leadership of the military.

And so on.

Some people undoubtly think of one or two aspects of the military when answering whether they approve or disapprove. Plenty of soldiers could name a Noncom or Officer they despised, or an aspect of the military bureaucracy that drove them crazy.

I suppose my point is just that one can approve or disapprove of many different things when the subject is "the military."

Just for the record, my overall attitude is "approve strongly".

I wonder if the majority of the 11% are code pink and other anti-military groups and individuals?

In the Marines, we have a saying something to the effect of "Go ahead, and be a part of that 10%". In effect, refrencing that there is a "bottom" portion of the unit, that gets by on the efforts of the other 90% without substantially contributing to the mission or the unit. They are the ones who "slip through" the cracks of boot camp and infest fleet units with their poor attitudes, lackadasical adherence to regulation, or downright insubordination. There is so much going on in boot camp, as well as watchful eyes making sure poor little recruits aren't being mistreated, its impossible for DIs to weed out everybody. So the task falls to the people in the fleet, to rid their units of the "bottom 10%".

We can't reasonably get rid of the "bottom 10%" of our society. In this topic, I view pacifists(in America) as the bottom 10%. People who enjoy the fruits of what others have provided them, while providing little else in return. There is no such thing as pacifism in the rest of nature.

That's 25 % too low as far as I am concerned!! Are some people answering the poll throught the prism of their own political convictions ? The military should not be subject to an opinion poll that can be influenced by someone's political opinion. I realize that there are the Code Pink's and other forms of fecal matter that just plain hate our military. There isn't much we do with athat form of crap EXCEPT FUSH IT.

On he flip side of the coin there are those people and groups who say nice things about the military in public but do not support the returning fighting men especially if they return seriously wounded. This same crows also just uses the military for it's own policy desires and not necessarily the needs or the best interests of the county.

Those people are ingrates, moochers and hypocrites for vicariously living off the men who defend this nation while not appreciating their efforts. Seems hypocritical to live in a nation whose current existence is maintained by the military when you do not favor the military. They just like those scum in Israel and other countries who hide behind their religion or race to weasel out of military service.

Not everybody is a flag waving retard who reads the bible everyday while cleaning their gun and thinks homosexuality is a mental delusion. People who don't care about the troops do exist and guess what - just like you and I - they pay taxes that go towards supporting the military and feeding the families of service men. Ain't America grand?

Hhmm_ “11% view the military unfavorably”. They had a saying in boot camp, way back in the stone age when I was their that 10% don’t/wont get the word; I guess there is inflation starting to kick in.

A person can possibly be a pacifist based upon relgious/philosophical convictions. I can accept that if those are really the reasons for their pacifism. I do not have to accept with them. What I cannot accept is those who do not separate their disagreement with the policyies of their government and blame the military for carrying out a policy that they do not agree with. People need to separate their disagreements with the policies of a government from the military.

Though there are retards among that group of people who "wave the flag" or who somehow manage to read the Bible not everyone who owns a flag and flies it, owns a gun and cleans it is a retard. In a democratic society there are those who may not care about the welfare of our troops and you are correct on that one point there is nothing we can about that.

Maybe we need to bring back the draft without any Cheneyist Deferments so that more people from more walks of life will share in the service to the country that provides them wth so much. No the RNC appologists will now accuse me of being a L word !! oh my !!

Judging by that comments you made You must be the opposite. Which is a anti-American/globalist and anti-2nd amendment nut who mocks patriotism. While believing in the man made global warming fairy tale(which most of you man made global warming fairy tale believers now call climate change so no matter how the whether changes you can try to claim to be right) you mock religious people for believing in things you think do not exist. Damn bible thumpers how dare they believe in such nonsense, Oh look if we don't recycle, increase taxes and buy carbon credits the world is going to get hotter and the polar ice caps will melt and the world will be flooded. Also you support little Timmy going to school as a girl just because some ****ed up in the head parents and quacks says little Timmy is really a girl even though he was born a boy and has male chromosomes ,But if Little Jimmy says he is a duck or a cat you think he is either pretending or he may need serious psychological help. And the most amusing thing about you is that you are black man you thinks its okay for people who choose to have anal sex comparing themselves to people who had to sit on the back of the bus, have separate drinking fountains, have separate schools, where burned on a cross by terrorist in sheets and enslaved and for some reason you probably think republicans are racist while the democrats have a long history of being the party of the KKK( I do not think a RNC convention was ever called a Klan Bake).

People who don't care about the troops do exist and guess what....

They are scum.

Well, this thread took an ugly turn.

It just seems so hypocritical to live in a nation if you despise it or would have nothing to do with the military in the country's time of need. We wouldn't exist without it and it just like a douche bag thing to do to go hide behind religion or some pacifist nonsense during a draft while your neighbors and friends go off to fight.

You guys know what is missing from this survey ? Let'slook at the question and the results first:
3* Okay… Do you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of the US Military?

75% Yes

11% No

14% Not sure "

What exactly does that mean a "favorable or unfavorable " opinion ?

Is it how well the military has performed in war ?

Is it that if you agree with a war that the military is fighting did you say "favorable" ?

Is it if you do not agree with a war that the military is fighting did you say "unfavorable" ?

For example if you agreed that Bush should have invaded Iraqistan did you say "favorable" ?

If you disagreed with that Bush should have invaded Iraqistan did you say "unfavorable" ?

Same question for Afghanstan.

I would expect the number to be much higher. It should be in the 95-98% range as 75 is far too low. Personally, I'd like to meet some of that 11% and ask them face-to-face what the **** is wrong with them? It's one thing to oppose the administration's policy on a certain issue, but not the military itself. This is just ludicrous and one more thing that is wrong with too many people in this country - they haven't a clue or respect for our heritage, the Constitution or common sense, let alone those that serve our country, putting their lives on the line each and every day.

There is an offsh00t from this survey!!!

We all have heard the words "support our troops".

What does that really mean ?

If you have yellow or red white and blue magnetic sticker that comes off in the car wash that says "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS". does that mean that you have "supported our troops" and that you are the ubber-patriot ?

What if you were happy when your congressman or woman person voted against more funding for VA hospitals and you said "good show" Mr. Congressman the "VA is a government Hospital system and that is socilaized medicine" so " glad you voted against it " ? Did you support our troops ?

Did you jump with joy when your Congressman voted against prostetic research which would have been geared to memebers of our military who lost limbs, were you being "supportive of our trooops" ?

You hate govenment research of any kind by the government since you think that a private company will step in and research and make those prostetic legs, arms, feet, hands, etc. that our wounded troops need. You think that if government doctors and research scientists make those postetics that the troops need those prostetics will be "socialist" legs, arms, feet, hands, Were you being supportive of our troops ?

I think if those were the factors the pollsters used the favorable results might be lower. One of the platforms democrats ran on was "this war sucks".

Afghanistan

Iraq

An unfavorably opinion could mean how our military was used. This is a classic case of a Poll being done to illicit a certain response.

The "war" that the "Democrats" were opposed to was the Iraq war I am not aware of any Democrat that was in opposition to the Afghanistan war against the terrorists. There may have been one or two such as Mixine Dirty Wates or that peice of crap from Georgia who hit a Capital police officer because the female dog forgot her badge !!!

I was just wondering what these people were thinking about when they answered the questions!!

That certainly is a possibility and I brought that up in diferent words!1

I'm sorely tempted to start using that phrase on the forum.

I really fear that doing away with the draft has removed too many people from serving, knowing soneone who served, and therefore not caring about those who served !!!
