We don't need the draft, and you don't need to be in the military to serve your country. Having a job and paying taxes is serving your country.

75% is a pretty good number, considering the vast spectrum of different beliefs, political and religious, in this country.

When it comes to a % of the military who I believe do their jobs well, I strongly believe the vast majority of the military do their jobs better than most civilian jobs, with more focus and determination. I believe most see the big picture and take their part in it with respective seriousness.

Most distrust of the military probably comes from the way those with the power (elected and appointed) to approve, deploy or recall a mission abuse their power.

I know that I have heard RNC commandos say "they volunteered" when Vet groups and others brought up the fact that our Guard and Reserves and even regulars were serving too many tours of duty with too little break in between !!

The same people who claimed that they supported the troops at 100 % were the first to say "they volunteered" when someone asked about just loking to see if the programs for VETS and active troops were good enough.

What I heard between the lines is "they volunteered" so what ever we give is "good enough".
A lot of people in office are hypocrites. However those in office do not get nailed for their hypocrisy. They tell us we do not have money to secure the border or we do not have money for this and that and turn around and give it away to other countries and bail out companies like somehow that money grows on trees. Those serving in the military should get more benefits, more pay and better equipment.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

The links I provided it shows support of the Afghanistan war around 50% and around 34% percent for the Iraq, if you look link the OP provide it shows the democrat favorable opinion of the troops 68%. So obviously they were not thinking the war in Iraq sucks or the war in Afghanistan sucks when they were asked if they had a favorable opinion about the military..
Ths thread is not about the stupidity of Bush taking us into a stupid war but if you want to stat one I will be glad to debate that.

Let's also get the true question up it's really not "favorable opinion of the troops " but it's more of a question about the military of which yes a major portion of that equation is the troops but there is the military establishment.

Yes I also did start down that other path and was talking about the troops exclusively but that is not exactly what the survey asked !!!

I see, so OUTSOURCING "your" service to the other guy is ok !!! Maybe we can go back to the way it was during the Civil War when one could pay someone to "serve" he says sarcastically!!! Hey why not outsource the military to Indian I know that the GHURKAS fight well and the Brits know that since they have used the GHURKAS snce what the early 19th century!!! he says sarcastically !!!!

It's free market approach !! GHURKAS and Shmerkas they are comodities so why not set up a ticker on WALL STREET and we can buy, trade, and sell the "fighting" man stock GI JOE !! What geat fun that would be !!!! Just think false rumors of peace breaking out and the market does into a nose dive.
War breaks out on 6 contitnents and the GI JOE stock does through the stratosphere!!!

    Outsourcing is pretty great.
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

We don't have a shortage of volunteers, and being a baker at Safeway is serving your country.
