What is being described as a full-scale Islamist insurgency is building in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan.

Russia recently ended its decade-long "counter-terrorism operation" against separatist rebels in the neighbouring republic of Chechnya, but the fighting has spilled into other regions.

Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reports from Dagestan.

So......what's to debate here?

Nothing, its just news and i post whatever is worth reading on the news to update you guys, not neccessarily for a debate.

uh.....sorry you didnt get the memo but people dont come here to get the news. We've got it already. We're here to debate different views on it.

Uhm, I guess you didn't get the memo (wow, that is such a lame saying) that this site isn't solely for debates. I'm sure I speak for other members on the site when I say that I appreciate people posting various news stories that I may have otherwise missed. The posting of a story is often times what leads to various comments that frequently go off on tangents where a debate does ensue.

Please refrain from posting these types of messages. Also, please liberally use the term 'we're' when attempting to refer to the members of this site, because you sure as hell don't speak for me.

Just to preempt your probable reply, this isn't a contradictory of hypocritical statement from the one I made above when I said "I'm sure I speak for other members of this site" because I am in fact sure that I do I speak for them. You on the other hand signify that you represent everyone with your usage of 'we're'.

Russia unlike the crybaby west though won't give up. May take them 100 years again to quiet this region but they will do it.

I admire the fighting abilities of the SS.
Doesn't mean I support their ideology.

Russia isn't Communist anymore btw.

Russia today compared to the west today is the difference between a bear led by a real leader and a wet hanky led by a joke.

On the contrary we,re in the process of withdrawing [god willing] from a nation we,re occupying because the locals want us to leave. Theres nothing weak willed or whatever about that its just common sence. I think the Russian government could learn something there.

And neither will work against the Islamists... These animals have any quantity of nations, I guess they want the whole world ???
IMO, only education will work, and this will take time..
I cannot understand why any sane man would want to be an Islamic terrorist ???

Its not so much about Islam as Nationalism. Been going on since Russia invaded in 1817 and long before.

You can subdue it. Russia today is doing a moderately good job of it the Communist did better.
Then the Communist just picked up entire populations and moved them into central Asia. Worked for the most part.

I am sure, like in Chechnya, Russia will find some merciless figure who will destroy the muslims. The worry for Moscow is whether or not they can control these guys. The leader of Chechnya has absolute control of the state.

Of course they can control them. The only reason Ramzan Kadyrov is still in power is because he is pro-kremlin and that pleases Vladimir.

Yeah right.
Exactly how they won in Afghanistan.
The only way that Russia can possibly (as you say win) is by eliminating the population.
Something tells me, they no longer have the balls to do that.
Not withstanding they also lack the Military manpower.

You are speaking as a rational person.
One presumes you have comfortable living quarters, possibly you may still be employed, you do not have to scratch around for food, you are not having your religion insulted.
You live in a relatively civilized society.
In short, you have prospects for a reasonable life.

The Islamic terrorist has none of the above.
Yes I would agree some of them do, not the broad majority.
So if they believe implicitly in their religion and are willing to be martyred for that belief and remember they are promised (at least according to their teachers) paradise after death, with all that they desire handed to them by their enemies.
To them this sounds like a good deal.

Understanding their motives is the easy part, educating them to believe that this is not the way that Allah wants them to live is something quite different.

They did it before... why not again?
Afghanistan is not the Caucasus's.
Chechnya the most recognized do to western news coverage has been pretty much subjugated.

Russia has had plenty of practice in subjugatign wide swaths of hostile territory form Ukrainians to Tajiks.

atm its reasonably stable even with the war Putin declared over still going at a low roar.

Oh and the Russians can be broke....but not as easily as the whiny ass west can be atm.

Vader your statements are constantly biased. Rather than debate the subject at hand you find a way (and an annoyingly simple one at that) to change the topic to how great and unstobbale the US is. Heres a news flash my friend. The US is deep in debt. They are in a recession. And they cant take on the world. The US got stomped in Vietnam. This proves that the US is arrogant. You cant just say your the best. Rather than choosing sides the US stands on the sideline and no matter who wins they can say they didnt lose.

No, please dont put words in my mouth. I am come here for a variety of reasons, reading the news and seeing intelligent debate surrounding the news being one of them.

Getting news from different sources is much more informative and accurate than one place. People post stories I often times would have missed or Fox News or any other mainstream media may have either not of covered or put a spin on.

Many times I can get two birds with one stone, checking the breaking news here and reading debate on it.

Yeah ...

I have to give you that one.

You are right about that.

:doh Right. Listen my arrogant friend. Check US and allied losses against hostile losses. Also, please note, the US did not achieve any of its prewar objectives.

Does that not count as a stomping?
