Later Terror Link Cited for 1 in 7 Freed Detainees

An unreleased Pentagon report concludes that about one in seven of the 534 prisoners already transferred abroad from the detention center in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, are engaged in terrorism or militant activity, according to administration officials.

Seems to me this story confirms the incompetence of the Bush administration. Check the record:

1 - Useful information stopped flowing as soon as they began to torture detainees

2 - It may be impossible to try tortured prisoners, who are the "worst of the worst", because of their treatment

3 - By releasing detainees without trying them, 1 out of 7 have returned to the battlefield, with renewed hatred for Americans.

tell me again how all this kept us safe?

Bush? Obama has released the detainees. And that administration is one who wants to incite fear to ensure people believe that the "War on Terror" must go on.

The prisoners released in the article were under Bush's administration. Thus, the argument is against Obama's plan to release more.

One in seven (14.3%) is considered a cause for concern.

I don't believe Obama has released a single prisoner. Why would he? The procedure is to try them. Only the incompetence of the Bush administration led to release of prisoners without trial.

So you think they released the prisoners not because they had no grounds to hold them for trial or because they had insufficient evidence or because a judge ordered it, but because they incompetently released them.....like accidently leaving the door unlocked, or just plain letting them loose because they promised to be good?

You made the allegation, you support it.

Re: Later Terror Link Cited for 1 in 7 Freed Detainees

Here, I'll try to help. Here is the announcement of the release of 7 prisoners in 2006, though it does not say why they were released.

The Department of Defense announced today that it released seven detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to Afghanistan. This movement included five detainees recommended for release by the Administrative Review Board.

During the course of the war on terrorism, the department expects that there will be other transfers or releases of detainees.

There are ongoing processes to review the status of detainees. A determination about the continued detention or transfer of a detainee is based on the best information and evidence available at the time. The circumstances in which detainees are apprehended can be ambiguous, and many of the detainees are highly skilled in concealing the truth.

With this release, DoD has transferred or released 267 detainees from GTMO – 187 for release and 80 transferred to other governments, including Afghanistan, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Kuwait, Morocco, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden and Uganda.
