Heading to a national park? Now you can pack heat

Why does any man need to pack a weapon when he visits a park ??
Better question... why should anyone otherwise legally able to do so NOT be able to carry in a national park?

Why does anyone need to demonstrate a need to exercise a specifically stated constitutional right?

I assume you favor a right to carry at public events as well....including political conventions and presidential speaking events? Isn't it true that your "constitutional right" should have no limits?

Because you can't shoot the animals, you can't target shoot, and you should not be shooting the other visitors. So, in the eyes of the park rangers, you are a potential security threat.

Thanks for A: not answering the question.

B: claiming I called DC a state, I didn't I asked which of these CITIES,,,

I also love that you went to highly biased sources.

Don't care much for facts eh? Bet you didn't even read them.

Actually, there are several:
  • self defense against animals
  • self defense against people
  • survival
In other words... all of the same reaons you have for having a gun anywhere else. Why should a national park be any different? Does crossing into a national park suddenly remove any and every threat you might face?

Thanks to a 279-147 vote Wednesday in the House of Representatives, visitors to the nation's parks and wildlife refuges will be able to carry weapons there if they abide by state weapons laws. The bill is on its way to President Barack Obama, who faces a dilemma: Gun rights advocates attached the provision to a sweeping overhaul of the credit card industry, an initiative Obama strongly supports, so he has little choice but to let the gun section become law.

Gun control advocates howled Wednesday, but to little effect.

I want to howl too. I couldn't agree more with the legislation, but I couldn't disagree more with how it was slipped into an unrelated bill. Legislators who do this kind of thing, why aren't their names made public?

So does this mean the rabid right was incorrect in saying that the left wanted to take away everyone's guns?

This isn't good news for the gun dealers, now sales will go down without the great "Take all your guns away Boogyman" to be afraid of.

If attacked, you can shoot the animals and visitors.

So, try again.

We're talking about this particular limit specifically.

Way to not address the issue.

After he read my last post to him, he googled "Sturgis Rally" to find out wtf I was talking about and is busy masturbating to the pics.

People who didn't carry guns into parks before this legislation, because it was not legal, are law-abiding citizens by definition. Now that they can legally carry guns into parks, why would they suddenly start poaching animals, or breaking any other laws for that matter? That makes no sense.

Guns != crime.
Gun owners != criminals.
NRA != evil.

Not saying that all gun owners are criminals just that it will be easier for poacher, because if they not caught red handed they just law abiding citizen taken a walk in the woods with their weapons. It's obvious it makes the park rangers job harder. That at the same time the need for protection is very slim, if not the criminality in American been really bad.

That gun issues mostly isn't not about evil or good, but that is practical. Take for example gun to protect you self from burglars, that I understand that some American believe in the need for it ecpecially if they have a family. But if you don't live in a high crime area (everything is relative maybe most of USA have much higher crime rate then Sweden) it's more practical not to have a gun if you have children. Because the risk of getting hurt by a burglar for a normal law abiding citizen is extremely slim. But if you have small children you will always fear that they get their hands on the guns. Because if you use it for protection you have always have it close at hand, so maybe you forget it on the nigh stand table. But yes their are still people that still are scared, but then it can be more practical to get a dog and it will be a good companion to the kids. It doesn't even have to big it's enough it can bark.

A bull moose is damned dangerous in rutting season. I've encountered feral dogs, who roam in packs, on several occasions when hiking; and these critters have no fear of people.

Laugh all you want, but the danger from wildlife is real and I'd rather be prepared to meet a threat, than not.

Yes I understand that you have bigger and dangereus animal in the American forest. Still I think the condition is general the same that you will face a bigger risk of getting killed from a car accident with a moose then an animal atack. That if you just take common advice like making sounds so you don't surprise animals and don't have easily accesible food if you sleep in the park the risk is very slim.

There isn't a valid reason to carry guns into a park in the first place. How long will it be until we read a story about one camper shooting another because his campfire smoke was blowing into his camp? :roll:
Maybe never.

Maybe never.

Just wanted to add for the benefit of ADK...

So we should restrict everyones rights because someone may be stupid or psychotic enough to maybe do something?

The majority should not be punished for the illegal acts of a few.

When we do this in the context of Free Speech, its called "prior restraint" and is held as an unconstitutional infingement of that right.

Those on the anti-gun side of things seem to understand that; why they can not or do not apply that same concept to guns is beyond reason.

Be reasonable. Why would it happen in a park when it doesn't happen every where else that its legal to carry firearms.

Check out these 2 stories. The first one is about a guy who raped and killed a woman on a state trail and the other is about a guy who has supposedly killed multiple people on the Appalachian trail.

I think it was last year that a woman was raped and murdered by a different man on the Appalachian trail.

Goobieman, why did you 'thank' this post after you reported it?

Been hiking and camping well off the beaten paths in national forest/parks for mosrt of my life.
Carrying a gun in a national park is a very common practice law allowing it or not. I don't but one of my friends always has a 9mm with him.

Reasons are self evident to anyone who has ever hiked outside the toilet party campsites.
Everything from bears(yes they are real) to absolute loony as all get out cabin fever hillbilly boys.
99% of the time you won't need a gun for either(bears/animals are usually more interested in getting away form a human then near one...hillbilly jimmy is usually more interested in getting drunk or high)
BUT having a gun is better then not having one in the event you do need one.

As for hiding it within a bill on something else..I don't think that should be allowed.
But it is... so I do not expect one party to follow non-existent rules while the other continuously inserts their crap in troop funding bills.
