Senate votes to block funds for Guantanamo closure

where did you get your crystal ball of optimism?

A White House task force is scheduled to report by July on how to close Guantanamo and what to do with the detainees. Some could be tried by military commissions, others could be sent to civilian U.S. courts, and still others could be transferred to foreign countries.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Tuesday that he agrees Congress should receive a more detailed plan and that the president will provide more specifics in a speech Thursday.

"The president still believes it's in our national interest to close Guantanamo Bay," Mr. Gibbs said

The truth is plain to see as long as people want to see the truth...

There have been several, and one day we'll know more detail. Los Angeles was the target of one large scale attack that was thwarted. This has been spoken of loosely, but not in full detail yet.

U.S. Thwarts 19 Terrorist Attacks Against America Since 9/11

If there was any substantial proof what so ever that attacks were twarted or information was obtained through torture that help to twart such attacks then Lord Cheney would have had that information out long ago..

By the was if that lady sitting next to Richard Reid on that plane wouldn't have blown out his match then we would be talking about yet another Bush/Cheney blunder.

They played ZERO roll in twarting Reids attempts to take that plane down.

The passengers of that plane saved themselves.

where did you get your crystal ball of optimism?

It is no crystal ball, it is fact. The Congress is only convering it's back for the upcoming elections, to say they were being responsible. It is all about not looking like tools for them. Watch and see.

You missed the point. When there were 2 relevant parties, they could pass blame on each other, to which the sappy "centrists" could latch onto the way they lean based on said blame.

This time, as the **** hits te fan, those sappy "centrists" won't have any other choice to go the other way...

You have a filibuster proof majority. Who else will be to blame? We are getting off topic, but I am calling it now.... This country will shift right again over the next 4-8 years. All because you won it all....

Sorry but just because a political party has run itsself into the ground and has made themselves no longer currently relevant does not mean that the last eight years of failed policies and the distaserous repurcussions of those policies are not still relevant today and in the future.

I know it's painful to watch...But the Dems will fix the Republicans blunders with or without them.

The level of brainwashing is astounding. You sure you weren't waterboarded?

And no, you'll be shaking your head in 4-6 years and wondering where all that power went. This is the second coming of Jimmy Carter, policies and all.

You mean 16 years don't you? After 8 years of President Obama and then 8 years of Hillary Clinton then and only then....maybe the Republicans will have regained enough respect and digintity in the eyes of the world to actually be relevant again in the world of American politics. Now they have none..as we can plainly see.

I just hope for the next 16 years the Dems will be able to keep our country safe from their attacks.

My concern here is not that the closing of Guantanamo was stopped by Congress, this may only be a bump in the road. I say that because the senators that I heard speak about their votes stated that they were against the funding because they did not get a plan for the closing by the administration. The closing could still happen after this plan is received by Congress.

That is the issue as I see it. The Obama administration issued an executive order to close the detention center without a real plan. Obama caused the problem he now has to deal with. I think this shows a lack of knowledge and experience on an issue that a President needs to be very knowledgeable on.

Oh yeh, the "Liberty Tower"....which doesn't exist.
Other "thwarted attacks" include the stoners who wanted to overrun an army base posing as pizza delivery men, and the morons who thought they could blow up JFK airport by setting fire to a fuel line ten miles away. I swear to God, these are the top of the list, and it's all downhill from here.

Republicans chose a 70+ year-old, very weak retread against Obama and garnered almost half the popular vote. Hopefully they learned, and will find another candidate in the mold of Reagan, clearly the greatest president in modern times.

In fact, 2010 isn't shaping up too well. Pelosi, Biden, and Reid are making idiots of themselves on a daily basis, and Americans are taking notice. I see 1992 coming all over again (which saved Clinton).

Its called the "Library Tower".... its in Los Angeles.

It was the target of a terrorist plot discovered and thwarted do to the interrogations conducted on Khalid Sheik Mohammad.

Your dismissal of other plots is noted. Its a game to you.

Never trust the left in any guise when it comes to the War.

Yes the greatest President in modern times armed and funded the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden during the Russian/Afghan war. The greatest President of modern times funded and armed Saddam Hussein during the Iran/Iraq war.
The greatest President in modern times started the major crack epidemic in this country by arming the Rebels in Nicaragua in trade for cocaine which was funneled into the states given to street gangs.

Yes the greatest American president in modern times actually negotiated with the Iranians to hold the 52 hostages until the very min he was inaugurated.

Yes Raygun was great wasn't he? Don't you remember the Iran/contra affair?

Why is it the every single Republican administration ends in contoversy and our country having a black eye?

Why ignore the Republicans daily blatant idiocy?

Obama campaigns on closing gitmo. Obama announces presidential orders to close Gitmo. Obama requests funds to close gitmo and is denied by congress.

It doesn't get anymore obvious than that folks. The excuses and contorting is simple denial.

+1 campaign promise unfullfilled.

Actually, I see it the opposite way.

Merely taking steps to move forward with his plan to close Gitmo is fulfilling a campaign promise.

Anyone with half a brain knows that the President is not the only ruling body in our country. If someone is so clueless to believe that a campaign promise means that it will happen NO MATTER WHAT .. well...psst..do you wanna buy a watch?

Two words, EPIC FAIL for Obama and good for America. I am shocked personally at the 90-6 vote against closing GITMO, Given the attacks on the last admin during the war by many of these senators on GITMO.

What made them take this stand? Did they see a light? Political seat stability reasons?

One thing we can say for sure. Is Obama failed here. And I for one am glad that this did not pass. Yes I wished for Obama to fail here.

Uhm.... The GOP is not in power in any branches of the government. This is dems right down the line. Sorry. this is all on the left.

I applaud them though for voting the right way.

Obama campaigned on, an attempted to find a way to close GITMO. His attempts were rejected, by his own party no less.

Willful denial of the facts. It's amusing that you link something that you obviously didn't even read, then use the opportunity to pounce on Obama.

From the article:

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, among the few Republicans joining former GOP presidential nominee John McCain of Arizona in calling for Guantanamo to be closed, scoffed at the idea that the government can't find a way to hold Guantanamo prisoners in the United States. Graham noted that 400,000 German and Japanese prisoners were held during World War II.

"The idea that we cannot find a place to securely house 250-plus detainees within the United States is not rational. We have done this before," Graham said. "But it is my belief that you need a plan before you close Gitmo."

It's simple. They want Obama to submit a plan for what to do with the prisoners. Even the most blind partisan hack has to admit that he's anything but a lazy guy, so he'll come up with one and then submit it. Gitmo will close once an agreement's been reached.

Really, what's your point, other than to make up reasons to bash Obama?

So you are saying that the people who voted for Obama because of his promises are gullible? Or are you saying Obama is unrealistic and naïve with his promises? Both?

Perhaps the campaign promises were just a joke? haha?

Actually I think thus far, Obama has continued the Republicans mistakes, and has added his own sugar to the pot spendin more in 100 days, than all presidents in history or some such.....

But hey that's just me.

Please. Obama thought all he had to do was waive his hand and thy will be done. he failed. his own party rebuked him.

Why? because they see the writing on the wall..... and self preservation is kicking in.

if you want to cry and bitch about "hacks" because as a "moderate" you can't stand ANY critisizm of dear leader. then perhaps you should stay out of these threads.

I love when so called "moderates" pucker up for obama. please. Obama is an adult, you don't have to run your mouth with this sort of nonsense because you think the Good Reverend is being a big meainie towards chairman maobama....... :rofl

Relax, Lenin and Stalin are not going to rebuke your membership card. Take it easy.

Nice bullet points though, and keep it up. This is the nonsense that always does your party in....again and again.

Proof?

I'll post where I wish, and say what I wish. How dare you insinuate I don't have the right? And I didn't state any particular person was a hack. If you don't like it, perhaps it's YOU who should go elsewhere.

So, what you're really saying, is you have no proof of any of your assertions whatsoever. Got it. Thanks!

Edit: I'm not a fan of Obama, I'm merely pointing out that you'll use any excuse to bash him. I judge him on the merits of his individual decisions.

Correcting the capitalization errors in your post. I really hate it when people do not present The Obama with the respect that He deserves.

You know what I'm saying, you just choose to ignore it.

I'll use simple words.

Obama made campaign promises.

Thus far, he is making strides toward putting many of them into effect.

Anyone who voted for him thinking that all he had to do was be put into office and everything he promised would instantly materialize is an idiot.

Does that make it more clear to you?

Purely a troll post. Thanks for adding absolutely nothing to the conversation.

It was a joke between RH and myself.
He gets it.
If you don't -- well, I won't lose any sleep.

It wasn't just between you and RH - if it was, you'd have sent a PM. You posted it on a public board...so I'd suggest not doing so if you can't take the criticism.
