Centrist
resident Barack Obama has been briefly heckled as he addressed students at the largest US Catholic university, amid a row over abortion rights.

Anti-abortion activists have protested against the president's visit to Notre Dame, in Indiana.

Protests and vigils have been held on and around campus, with several people arrested before Mr Obama's speech.

Mr Obama, who received an honorary degree, defended the right to abortion but said the procedure should be rare.

After entering the White House in January the president also quickly moved to reverse a Bush-era ban on embryonic stem-cell research, angering many social conservatives.

There are approximately 60 million Roman Catholics in the US, with almost half of them supporting abortion rights, research suggests. Some 42% believe abortion should be illegal.

The Catholic church supported abortion until the late 1800's (its hard to tell with these hypocrits what exactly is it they are against).

Check out the vid on there of Obama being heckled by the audience during a speech. He handled it well, accepted it, moved on, voiced his opinions on why abortion is right and continued. One of the best president the US will see.

Re: Catholics shout and interrupt Obama speech

There were four interruptions, and two of them actualy stopped Obama for a few seconds. Most of the audience was largely enthusiastic and supportive of Obama.

Catholics shout and interrupt Obama speech

Any chance you could change that to some Catholics.

Re: Catholics shout and interrupt Obama speech

I'm all about freedom of speech, but have some respect. I am not Obama's biggest fan, but even I think interrupting his speech and heckling him while he's trying to speak is a bit tacky.

You mean they sat and watched while he read the teleprompter?

That is not "most of the audience being enthusiastic or supportive of Obama".

Shut up with the teleprompter Triad. At least the democrat politicians have brains unlike the idiots you lot find under rocks in Texas.

Re: Catholics shout and interrupt Obama speech

When Obama doesn't read one verbatim everytime he "speaks" I will.
Until then TOTUS rules.

Re: Catholics shout and interrupt Obama speech

Is using a teleprompter wrong?

No, but some folks on the right are desperate to find something to criticize President Obama over, so we get things like telepromptergate, and shoegate. I know for a fact President Bush the younger and President Clinton used one, and am pretty sure President Bush the younger used one, and it probably goes back further than that.

Well said. I get the angst that some might have with Obama speaking at Notre Dame but he is a sitting POTUS. For that reason alone, he should be accorded a level of respect that does not include heckling.

Hogwash.

He's a politician. Being a target is part of the game. If he doesn't want to play, he can always resign.

Yeah...it is. ...And so is accepting an honorary law degree from a Catholic University amid such obvious dissent. IMO, he should have declined the invitation. He undoubtedly could have mentioned his reasons for declining at his interview with Newsweek on the way to Arizona--another contested honorary degree which was not given to him. I think it shows a lack of class, but then again, I'm not impressed with all the personal digs that our president engages in--I think it's beneath the office.

Re: Catholics shout and interrupt Obama speech

When you use it in the manner Obama does..yes.

It should be a reminder at most. Not used to read verbatim back and forth like your watching a tennis game. He doesn't give speech's he reads at you.

There has never been a President so reliant on reading whatever he has to say as Obama. Those who had access to such technology used it in the same manner as paper notes. They used it as a reminder of what they where sayign not as a book.

IE Bill Clinton gave a State of the Union after remarking that the speech in the Teleprompter was not the right one. Like every President but Obama he didn't need it..it wasn't a crutch.

Its clear as day Obama does not know what he is going to be reading at you other then the general overall gist.
The 'Great Orator' claim has fallen flat on its face.

Most polls read the telepromter so WGAS !!

" A few self righteous Catholics run mouth"

Any chance you could change that to some Catholics.

" A few self righteous Catholics run mouth" during President Obama's speech. Would that work for anyone ?

I would prefer something a bit more respectful. I am very much pro abortion rights, but I respect those who believe differently, and hope that if we show them respect, maybe they can show us respect, and the tone of the debate can be mellowed a tad.

It especially amuses me when they find a way of comparing Obama to Bush. Now that is hilarious! :rofl

Actually, it was comparing President Obama to several presidents, showingthat they had the trait in question in common. Further, it was to poke fun of the whole concept that it is somehow unpresidential to use a teleprompter. This was not "finding a way to compare". Read content, not just isolated words.

I wasnt referring to your post or Triads post, there is thread dedicated to how Obama and Bush are actually so alike in a thread called "For all you Bush haters". Search it up.

I agree. I personally despise Obama and everything he stands for, but he is the President of the United States and we ought to honor him properly. Heckling him is childish and does absolutely nothing to promote the cause of Life. What did they think would happen? They shout at Obama and then all of a sudden, Obama says, "Golly Gee, people. It just hit me. Abortion is freaking AWEFUL! Thank you hecklers! Thank you for showing me the light!".

It's like guys who honk or whistle at women. What do you expect to happen?

Re: Catholics shout and interrupt Obama speech

Show me a President in the past where a Teleprompter was present at every speech..Reading every line from it..all the time.

You can't. One doesn't exist. No President has every read a teleprompter (in Obama's case TWO) verbatim as tennis head does.

So stop trying to sully past Presidents who used one form time to time as an aide by comparing them to Obama's watch me while I read 2 of them at you.

Few times I have seen him have to answer or speak without a teleprompter he sucks..to call this man a "great orator" is ridiculous.
His constant reading of a teleprompter at people is embarrassing and I cannot believe they have not gotten rid of them.
That they haven't tend to support the idea that Obama doesn't know what he is going to be saying without one...and a couple of oops Teleprompter moments have enhanced that perception.

Like it or not this-

IS reality.

I agree with you on the heckling but I must say there is no need for the anti-Catholic stuff.

The Church's stance on abortion is complicated and I'm not sure the bolded text is particularly accurate or at least in the correct context, mate.

PS: These teleprompter digs are getting lame fast.

How exactly do you know that no other president has done it? Can you prove that assertion? I can prove that they did in fact use teleprompters, and will happily, but you need to prove yours as well. In point of fact, how do you know that President Obama uses a teleprompter for every speech?

I do not call him a "great orator". I have said on this forum that he gets the message across, and that is all I expect, so I am happy.

I will repeat that it is the stupid, trivial crap like that that helps makes you guys on the right look pathetic and out of touch, and without any vision for America. Us on the left, we are trying to pull us out of the economic catastrophe, trying to make the country a better place...you guys are getting all upset over what shoes Michelle Obama wears, and whether President Obama reads his speeches off a teleprompter or not.

Teleproptergate is petty and trivial, and it's like the gift that just keeps on giving. Every time you complain about it, we on the left look better...so keep it up please.
