Buy good cars at good prices. Demand quality.

If Ford, GM, and Chrysler can show quality, they can compete. If they cannot, then the way to salvage the jobs is for them to fail, so that other companies which will build and deliver quality may rise in their place.

As several companies in a host of industries have already discovered, a commitment to "Buy American" costs jobs; it does not save them.

I do not do this often, but I am going to both thank you, and agree with you.

The big problem with the 3 million jobs lost doomsday scenarios is that they assume that no other company will replace failed companies. If both GM and Chrysler go under, people will still buy roughly the same number of cars, meaning Ford, Toyota, Honda, et al will benefit

Given the fact that Toyota is experiencing record amounts of its own red ink this year, the argument that some car manufacturers must fall seems unavoidable. Supporting decrepit companies only delays the inevitable and magnifies the pain and suffering for all concerned.

(BTW, don't thank me too much....I buy Fords! )

I bought Hyundai and I am pleased. I own a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon SE V6. The only problem was the POS clutch. I put an aftermarket one in within a few months of owning the vehicle and I have had no problems so far(I'm at the 45k mile mark.).

I have not seen the most recent numbers, but in terms of which companies are suffering from the biggest loss of sales, Toyota is doing better than either GM or Chrysler, and about the same as Ford IIRC. Almost no company is doing well through this time, but some are doing better than others.

Oh, and Ford...the one company we do not make parts for...

Unions in this case did not help. Autoworker unions became the mafia. Chrysler will not buy back a single part from it's dealers when they close so all inventory is dumped on the owners of the dealerships! How will they get rid of all this?

I would love to have a sit down with these unions and say, "if these companies go under you get 100% of nothing, if you help them out and take maybe 60% of your benefits at least your still employed and getting said benefits, WAKE UP". Dealers getting rid of the parts? ebay, or sell to third party auto parts companies/private mechanics.
Neither side in an argument can find the truth when both make an absolute claim on it.

Want to know what that means? A whole LOT of car salesmen are going to have to look for another line of work. That's just about the last thing we need - More politicians. Yuck!!

    Article is here.
Anicdotal second-hand inside scoop: My mother works for NUMMI in Fremont, CA. She tells me that folks making GM cars down there are not worried about loosing their jobs because that plant will be producing all the cars these other plants won't be when they close.

NUMMI isn't GM, but they make GM cars, and the cars are going to be made rather or not GM plants make them.

NUMMI does final assembly doesn't it? Is GM moving actual final assembly away from UAW plants? That would be a huge hit to the UAW, since most of what GM and Chrysler actually do still in the US is final assembly.
