How about don't make people feel like it's their patriotic duty to buy something they don't need and perhaps can't afford? With the "go out and buy something you need a loan to purchase, and you don't need it" attitude, we'll never get out of this economic struggle. People need to be more responsible with their money.

If it makes you feel better, my entire family drives Toyota or Toyota subsidiaries. Gave up on Detroit a long time ago.

Not really !the reason that GM and Crysler earlier had to close these dealerships is because they have more dealerships than customers. Just like a store if a store is not cutting it and cannot sustain itself it will eventually get closed.

This is a sad day for America !!

I am an American. In fact, I live in Michigan, where the auto industry is the predominant industry. While Ford, GM and Chrysler do contribute jobs to the area, so do Toyota, and a number of others. Best check your facts.

The response was to someone who said that we should buy a foreign car brand and send the profits to a foreign country and thereby cost for American jobs.

No amount of money would save all the jobs. It's a relative thing. A few thousand jobs versus a doomsday scenario of up to 3 million jobs that some claim. Now, I admit that 3 million jobs is a gross exaggeration of anything that is likely to happen...in fact, even 1 million is probably an exaggeration, but that does not change that if GM and Chrysler went out of business, it would have a terrible effect on employment.

Whether the money was needed to keep those two companies from going out of business is a debatable point, and I am not sure whether it was or not. Whether one of the big three being let go would not have had a positive effect overall for the auto industry, well, that is pretty possible too. But, Tarp money has potentially saved jobs.

Facts are that Toyota may contribute jobs but since Toyota is a foreign company the profits go to a foreign contry. As that keeps up and more and more American jobs go bye bye there will come a time that the countries where companies such as Toyota are from will not have a market in the US to sell to since Americans will be a 2nd world country.

It doesn't matter where the money's going if it's going out of someone's pockets.

Check out the meaning of the phrase "publicly traded company".
