Cheney Will Appeal CIA Decision on Memos

Former Vice President Dick Cheney will appeal a CIA decision denying his request for the release of memos he's contended are crucial to proving the success of "enhanced interrogation techniques" of detainees.

Cheney's office released a two-sentence statement reacting to the denial, "The Obama Administration has denied Vice President Cheney's request for the declassification of two documents that provide information about the effectiveness of the detainee program. Vice President Cheney is preparing his appeal to this denial."

Re: Obama Administration to Cheney: Request Denied

Don't worry Press Secretary Extraordinaire Gibbs is blaming Bush&Cheney for not being able to release them.

"The CIA is the agency that has jurisdiction over this," Gibbs told reporters aboard Air Force One as President Barack Obama returned from a trip to Arizona and New Mexico. "They made the decision, in all honesty, based on an executive order from the Bush administration, which under the type of request that Vice President Cheney made, precludes these being declassified because they're part of ongoing litigation. The executive order updated in the Bush administration precludes their release."
    but..

While Gibbs is correct that the order exempts the documents from automatic or "mandatory" review while litigation is pending, there is no legal obstacle to the Obama administration declassifying the material either on their own initiative or in response to the litigation. Indeed, that is precisely what happened with the four Office of Legal Counsel memos about the interrogation program that were released back on April 16.

You liberals, lefties and so called centrist moderates all crack me up.

Obama and Co. release just enough information to portray the EIT as being ineffective, illegal and to stoke the flames of passion in their supporters to stay focused on the Bush Admins "failures". (It's an old magicians trick make your audience watch the left hand while the right hand puts the rabbit in the hat!)

The Former VP of the United States of America, and arguably one of the more pro-active and involved VP's, says "Woah, hey buddy, don't just tell a mangled version of events, release the whole story!"

Obama blocks it. And you people just keep oohing and ahhing at his skills. Forget about transparency, that was just a campaign promise. Forget about finding out the whole truth...

Most of you do not CARE what the truth is. If you did, you'd be ticked off Obama is blocking these memo's. To say otherwise is patently dishonest.

Why would he have? They were "secret" and no in the Bush administration... hell no one in the country would believe the next President and staff would start releasing half the truth to support political gains for their party and threaten to prosecute lawyers for their opinions. Such dishonesty and incompetence was not anticipated.

PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll finds 51% of Americans in favor and 42% opposed to an investigation into the use of harsh interrogation techniques on terrorism suspects during the Bush administration. At the same time, 55% of Americans believe in retrospect that the use of the interrogation techniques was justified, while only 36% say it was not. Notably, a majority of those following the news about this matter "very closely" oppose an investigation and think the methods were justified.

The CIA interrogators will not be prosecuted. The Attorney General has prudently declined prosecutions of former DoJ lawyers for preparing legal opinions. There is no large groundswell of public opinion calling for either prosecutions or a questionably-named "truth commission." Despite all the angry rhetoric flying back and forth, no serious charges have yet been laid at the feet of Bush, Cheney, or any who served in their Administration.

I can understand why Dear Leader would deny Cheney's request--this story has no more value to him in the news cycle and it needs to go away. But Cheney refuses to go away--and now, regardless of what the documents Cheney seeks to be release actually say, the news cycle will remain pre-occupied with this story. Worse, the story line shifts away from the interrogation techniques themselves to what politicians knew then, what they know now, and what they did with that knowledge. The story is metamorphosing into one about Pelosi lying and Dear Leader covering up the truth, possibly to protect Pelosi. Whether there was or was not torture really no longer matters.

This "mess" is growing, and so far has hit all the wrong targets.

Libertarians can run the gauntlet of the spectrum. If you think there is no problem with how Obama and Co are behaving in this instance... well, you crack me up.
