What the hell? Don't these women go through enough in Saudi with all of the rules they must follow? Jeez.

(May 10) -- Husbands are allowed to slap their wives if they spend lavishly, a Saudi judge said recently during a seminar on domestic violence, Saudi media reported Sunday. Arab News, a Saudi English-language daily newspaper based in Riyadh, reported that Judge Hamad Al-Razine said that "if a person gives SR 1,200 [$320] to his wife and she spends 900 riyals [$240] to purchase an abaya [the black cover that women in Saudi Arabia must wear] from a brand shop and if her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment."

Women in the audience immediately and loudly protested Al-Razine's statement, and were shocked to learn the remarks came from a judge, the newspaper reported.

Saudi women's rights activist Wajeha Al-Huwaider told CNN that Saudi women routinely face such attitudes.

"This is how men in Saudi Arabia see women," she said in a telephone interview from the Saudi city of Dahran. "It's not something they read in a book or learned from a friend. They've been raised to see women this way, that they're less than a person."

Al-Huwaider added that "I'm not surprised to see a judge or a religious man saying that - they've been raised in the same culture - a culture that tells them it's ok to raise your hand to a woman that this works."

More power to those women who were in the court room that protested.

I do applaud the Saudi women for their fight against these kind of men they have in the country. Many young women over there are realizing and understanding, these things are not right. I am glad they have more opportunity to become educated about women's rights. Don't get me wrong, they still have a long fight ahead of them, but everyone has to start somewhere.

Yeah and when they got home, they were probably hit and shackled.....jeez.

Well they did have the confidence to stand up and I fully support their actions.

Wow, nothing says "I love you honey" like a legal pimp slapping eh?

The Middle East, a cauldron of 12th Century train of thought.:screwy

Bitch slapping is legal in Arabia?

As if wearing a burka wasn't enough.

Saudi Judge Slap Wives

My God.
Can someone slap this Judge?

Much respect to the Saudi women who protested this BS.

I'm sorry, but this video was gonna get posted sooner or later:

And spending $240 on one piece of clothing. I honestly don't see it as a big deal.`

When it comes to women's issues, the Saudis are living in the dark ages. Sure, they may be "better" than the Taliban on that front, only because Saudi girls get an education, but they're still a country where women's rights is an oxymoron.

Oh come on, thats a terrible comparison. Women in Saudi Arabia have the benefit now of an "independent judiciary", they now have to have two unrelated clerics approve their being stoned.

They also get to have both eyes exposed in public so they can safely judge distance.

To be fair, If I spent $240 on an article of clothing and my wife didn't slap me for it, I'd probably divorce her.

Our own society does not come off much better in some cases.

I don't have a problem with slapping at all......

As long as it is in a 3 Stooges show.

If the wife is prepubescent is the slap more like a good spanking?

I dunno. Maybe someday the same outrage will be levied at those who think it's OK to slap children.

You should direct that question to Muhammad.

so they have to wear those awful veils and they can't even have nice ones

I know right?
That is just plain heartless.

If i wore such a depressing veil, i'd like to put some flowers or spice it up without getting a fist o_O
