EVANSTON -- Professors, students and alumni at Northwestern University are orchestrating a hunger strike in support of an American journalist imprisoned in Iran.

The FreeRoxana campaign is being organized in an effort to pressure Iran to release Roxana Saberi. She's a 1999 graduate of the university's Medill School of Journalism.

The 31-year-old North Dakota native was arrested in January and convicted last month of spying for the U.S. She was sentenced to eight years in prison after a one-day trial behind closed doors.

Irans treatment of journalist, political dissidents, women, homosexuals, and apostates are human rights violations that everyone should be concerned with. Roxana Saberi was railroaded by an evil theocracy which will stop at nothing to crush those it disagrees with.

People think because it worked for Ghandi, it'll work for them.

I'm sure the Iranians will quickly fly over to feed people they have never heard of nor care about and on top of that they will release a political prisoner because they feel bad.

Dancing away my hunger pains....... - Homer Simpson

Gandhi is only recognized because he got capped.

Gandhi's myth is a trillion times larger than the actual person. His solution for the Jews during the holocaust was to commit mass suicide, to get the world angry against the Axis regimes.

He wore a Top-Hat and went to universities in Europe. However the only pictures we see are a frail, dying old man. I don't hate the man, I just think we like to see an era, find one defiant voice and rule out all the others.

A hunger strike? How is this supposed to free Saberi faster? Are the Iranians going to look at the headline news of some local paper on North Western's campus and say "uh oh... whitey ain't eatin, we better release our political prisoner"?
Yawn (I seriously yawned at this time, and I thought it was appropriate)

Right; the primary difference here is that people in India actually cared about Ghandi. I get a feeling Iran wouldn't shed any tears about a few college students getting skinny.

Its symbolic but that's besides the point.
2 American women journalist are also being held in North Korea.

Whats telling is neither the media in the USA nor the Government of the USA seems to care.

The obvious conclusion to that is Obama will not rock the boat even for American's who are in effect being held hostage and the media will gladly make sure they don't become big issues.

Only thing left to do is things like this in a rather vain hope of forcing attention to the issue.

The U.S. state department issues warning about travels to these countries, these IDIOTS decided to go against it. Their fault, their trouble. These warnings are issued for reasons, such as it is NOT SAFE for Americans to go to.

If you are going to ignore the warnings of the U.S. on specific areas for travel, you travel at your OWN RISK.

YEAH. Hunger strikes are so typical for those darned liberals. I mean, it seems like if anything happens in this world, I'll be darned if a bunch of liberals don't just stop eating about it. So typical.

I was referring to TheNextEra's "the hell with them they deserve it" routine.

That was a typical Left-Liberal, New-Liberal, or as I prefer to call them Far Left response.

So you are suspending personal responsibility for this attack I take it?

Its not an "attack".
Its just an observation of the typical response you'd see from many "Liberals" today.
Look up the definitions if you must.

Did I accuse someone of being a nefarious individual with an epitaph? :rofl
no

If you meant the ('..."the hell with them" routine.') bit ..read their post.

If you're just being sarcastic..well ok:3oops:

This is just stupid. Iran is not going to give a ****. At most the Iranians are probably laughing their asses off over the idea that naive school kids here in the US can change the minds of the Iranian government by starving themselves. Thats like threatening to hurt yourself if China doesn't free Tibet or stop exploiting workers or threatening to shove a jumbo novelty pencil up your ass if North Korea doesn't stop its nukes.

Yeah its ****ed up that woman was brought up on fraudulent spy charges and tossed in prison. However stipud college kids over here in the US starving themselves is not going to make one bit of difference to the Iranians.

They ignored a warning from the state department. They are responsible for that. It's just like what "typical" conservatives said about Sean Penn and Operation Human Shield.

I think what TheNextEra has said makes perfect sense. Its like ****ing with a rattle snake after you have been educated in school that it is a venomous snake and other people told you not to **** it and you still decided to go mess with it and got bit.

He was actually a Hitler sympathizer:

"I do not consider Hitler to be as bad as he is depicted. He is showing an ability that is amazing and seems to be gaining his victories without much bloodshed." -- Ghandi

I hope Obama goes to Iran soon.

I don't even see what the arguing here is about. Does any one not think the Northwestern people doing the hunger strike are not being stupid and ineffective? Why is it in something that seems so obvious and bipartisan, do we need to throw in partisan bickering?

Ha ha, okay... Thing is, I thought of that as much more of a conservative thing to say than a liberal. I have been many times referred to as a liberal, and yet I balked at such a statement.

Ahmademonjihad announced over the weekend that Iran will here an appeal for Saberi. Pressure from Human Rights organizations may or may not have something to do with it. I doubt it, It has never worked in the past. Iran will continue with there evil was regardless of outside influnces.
