    Australia outlines military plans

Eight frigates and 24 combat helicopters are also on the list, set out in the country's first defence white paper for 10 years.

The government says it will enable Australia to defend its interests in a changing Asia-Pacific region.

The white paper is entitled: "Defending Australia in the Asia-Pacific Century; Force 2030".

The 12 new hunter-killer submarines - which will be built in Australia - will double the size of the current fleet.

One hundred F-35 fighters will be purchased over the next decade, and funds will also be allocated to counter cyber and electronic warfare.

Although this has faced significant opposition from the people of Australia, it is likely to go through due to a sustained conservative cabinet.

What do you mean by significant?

The Australian Animal Right's Watch Group (The AARWG, similar to the sound made by a Kangaroo) has been in sharp opposition to the Australian Special Forces (SAS) future plans to equip specially trained Kangaroos with a variation of jump boots, allowing them to leap incredible distances. Details about the program are classified, but increased surveillance abilities as well as bridge making have been theorized as potential uses.

I think he means the groups that want the US to continue defending them, while those same groups revile the militaristic Americans.

Oh, in that case I think we should help Australia finance about 50 more subs, to piss off the Chinese.

The gov't is a labour gov't. I mean they're New labour types like any of these social democratic parties these days but I'd hardly call them conservatives.

I've heard only a little about this but I would hardly call it sustained opposition, in fact few people seem to care.
