BBC World News said:
The Australian government says it is to spend more than $72bn (£48bn) upgrading its military over the next two decades.

Key purchases include 100 fighter jets and 12 new submarines, replacing the current fleet of six.

Eight frigates and 24 combat helicopters are also on the list, set out in the country's first defence white paper for 10 years.

The government says it will enable Australia to defend its interests in a changing Asia-Pacific region.

The white paper is entitled: "Defending Australia in the Asia-Pacific Century; Force 2030".

The 12 new hunter-killer submarines - which will be built in Australia - will double the size of the current fleet.

One hundred F-35 fighters will be purchased over the next decade, and funds will also be allocated to counter cyber and electronic warfare.

Good for the Aussies. One of America's closest friends and allies.

Although this has faced significant opposition from the people of Australia, it is likely to go through due to a sustained conservative cabinet.

What do you mean by significant?

Where did you get this from? I find it hard to believe the Australian people are devastated at the fact there government is going to spend some more modernizing there defence

The Australian Animal Right's Watch Group (The AARWG, similar to the sound made by a Kangaroo) has been in sharp opposition to the Australian Special Forces (SAS) future plans to equip specially trained Kangaroos with a variation of jump boots, allowing them to leap incredible distances. Details about the program are classified, but increased surveillance abilities as well as bridge making have been theorized as potential uses.

Oh, in that case I think we should help Australia finance about 50 more subs, to piss off the Chinese.

The gov't is a labour gov't. I mean they're New labour types like any of these social democratic parties these days but I'd hardly call them conservatives.

I've heard only a little about this but I would hardly call it sustained opposition, in fact few people seem to care.

New Zealand needs to follow in the same steps as Australia. We need a concrete military to defend ourselves, from both China, Australia and other perceived threats. Inevitably, Australia will swallow us whole, whether we like it or not, Australia's going to become a significant world player soon.

If anything, NZ needs to revive it's Air Force, after the previous government scrapped, disbanded, and sold our Air Combat wing, and all it's jets.

I thought you were a vegan and didn't believe in killing anything.

I dont think Australia is going to become a world superpower any time soon, if thats what your talking about. If you mean a regional power, then it already is.

I'm not advocating that New Zealand should follow Australia's footstep to go into war and kill people, but for defence purposes, every country has the right to protect itself, and I think New Zealand needs to improve it's military capabilities to do so, right now, it doesn't look like it's even trying.

What - no Kangaroo Bombers?

What - does Greenpeace have a navy to threaten New Zealand now?

The whole idea that militarization is for defense is a bunch of non-sense. Australia wants offensive capabilities to get its piece of the world pie, nothing more. As it stands, its military is not in a position to take place in a lot of the major world campaigns right now. Its contribution to the war in Afghanistan was not the greatest, for example. There is a rise of conservativism in most of the Western governments now, including Australia, which naturally leads to increased military spending.

No one wants to invade Australia. It the most arid continent... the population that's living there is barely sustainable as it is, given increasing resource challenges (such as water). There's some oil there, sure, but it's nothing to scoff at. Resource limitations and being in a relatively isolated geographic location are good incentives to want an expanded military to go abroad.

They have great parties though. :)

What's that suppose mean? Seriously, I'm not getting it.

I agree with Orius about invading Australia, the same applies to New Zealand. NZ's small, isolated, and it would be a huge waste of time and money trying to invade NZ, and there is hardly any benefit.

But still, I think the NZ Forces still need to look respectable, at best. We only have 2 frigates in our Navy, the 2 frigates make up our whole offensive line, supported by a few smaller patrol boats. We lack an Air Force, and our Army is still using equipment such as artillery and arms from the 1970s.

Kiwi's may be flightless, but I don't think our Air Force should be.

Ever heard of JI?

Sorry, I didn't see a "tongue in cheek" icon. No one is going to invade New Zealand save a couple of Greenpeace cutters.

I likes me some Australia, good for them!
