Religious tend to support torture more often

This was a pretty interesting read.

Survey: Support for terror suspect torture differs among the faithful - CNN.com

The statistics show that the more often you attend church... the more likely to support torture. When I read this I found it interesting but not surprising. Thoughts?

I'm not sure what to make of that. I'm hesitant to assume religion somehow causes people to support torture.

I'm more inclined to believe that it has more to do with political affiliation than religion.

Well no-one has tortured more people than the religious authorities I guess. But in America, more religious people seem to be conservative. Guess that when Jesus said love your neighbour he was wasting his time.

I think a lot of it has to do with the Christian tendency to embrace torture as an article of faith, as witnessed by the huge success of the movie "Passion of the Christ", which revelled in the supposed torture of Jesus. After seeing what their Savior went through, Christians would consider waterboarding a leisure activity.

I suspect who has tortured and mass murdered more people were atheists such as Stalin, Mao, Hitler...

nice try at supporting religious bigotry though.

I'm not a bigot, just stating a fact. You may have forgotten the tortures of religious authority in the dark ages and the middle ages, but I haven't forgotten. Hitler wasn't an atheist by the way.

How come nowadays religous people tend to support torture than athesists then joko? Whats the reason? Or are you going to avoid the topic of conversation just to bash me?

Mass murder aside, I would bet the Catholic church has tortured more people than all those dictators combined. The Inquisition lasted for 600 years.

Interesting, but it has more to do with political affiliation than Christianity. I mean it is a well known fact the majority of Christians tend to be Republicans or at least lean to conservatism.

As far as condoning torture, please. You are trying to compare the inquisition in Europe to 20th century Russia. This is like trying to compare the Crusades to Desert Storm, just silly.

I wonder what percentage of homosexuals in this country support torture? Seeing as how their's is the only demographic that seems to matter anymore...

Poll finds broad approval of terrorist torture - Americas- msnbc.com

hmmmm it seems that there is broad support for "torture" all accross the globe, but hey, never miss a good chance to demonize religious people.
