Ships who can't be protected by the European mission Atalanta may ask to be protected by a squad of 8 soldiers if they pay 115,000€

That's quite a good idea!
I just hope they won't have to make summonings in 10 languages before starting to shoot!

So basically....your government is renting out mercenaries. Damned it, I knew there was money to be made in that racket.

The money is to pay the costs of the operation, it's not to make benefits!

And it's only for Belgian ships that can't be protected by the European mission Atalanta

But you're hiring out your military for "protection". That's truth. The military is already paid for via tax payers, you're now renting out the military to people who can afford it for protection.'

Just give the bastards on board guns and be done with it...a hell of a lot cheaper than mercenaries.

Here's the OP quote in English:

The Council of Ministers decided within the framework of the fight against piracy, to put soldiers aboard ships flying Belgian flag whose ship-owner asks it. The decision is of application for two months, of at the beginning of May with at the end of June.

The Belgian merchant fleet will have in priority to ask for the assistance of the European fleet within the framework of the Atalanta mission which is active in the area and in which the Louis-Marie frigate will take part at the beginning of September, explained after the Council the Minister for Defense, Pieter De Crem.

If this fleet cannot ensure the protection of the Belgian trading vessels, the ship-owners will be able to call upon a team of 8 soldiers for the protection of their ships. The ship-owners will have to pay a flat-rate amount of 115.000 euros per mission to cover the expenses of the operation. Each mission should last approximately a week.

Those pirates don't stand a chance. They are no match for Jean-Claude Van Damme!

The pirates are being owned already

BBC NEWS | Africa | Somali vigilantes capture pirates

Somali vigilantes have captured 12 armed pirates in two boats, as coastal communities begin to fight back against the sea raiders.

Regional leaders at Alula and Bargaal in Somalia's northern Puntland region told the BBC they have put together a militia of fishermen to catch pirates.

They decided to act as they were fed up with their fishing vessels being seized at gunpoint by the ocean-going bandits.

Indeed they're being paid and maybe they should try to protect every ship instead of that

However, they're not mercenaries because
- they're part of the conflict (they protect Belgian ships being attacked, not French or Italian ones)
- the money is not for them, it's to pay the material
- they're part of an official mission for the army

You didn't trust me?

The man gets around, married five times, twice to the same woman.

Didn't know Belgium had an army. I've learned something today. Thanks!

is the Belgian army just as the French...??? in that all they shoot is white flags....???

I say we let the IDF handle it .....(no geneva convention requirements)....if its headin toward a ship .....one warning shot.....them drown the bastards with lead.....

swiss cheese dont float:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

Mercenaries would probably do a better job and have the HUGE benefit of being able to act instead of calling the UN.
They fulfill numerous roles(esp in Africa) and much more often then not their presence is a benefit to the populace of a nation/region.
Mercenaries are not EVIL either or nefarious simply by being Mercenaries. That's a really childish outlook on them.

Whatever..

Least Belgium is trying to do something.

Notice how the Big Bad Obama is backing up his mouth?
Once again Obama flops and it hurts the USA everytime he does that.
Already hard to take him seriously as it is.

Maybe he should hire mercenaries. He can sit back and aggrandize himself off their successes or demonize them for their failures..
...you know like he does with the US MILITARY.
