Egypt slaughtering all pigs to stop swine flu


The Egyptian government says it has begun slaughtering all pigs in the country as a precautionary measure against the possible spread of swine flu.
The Health Ministry says the slaughter of the country's 300,000 pigs will begin immediately.

The ministry has stated several times that there are no cases swine flu in the country, however neighboring Israel has reported two.

Well, that makes sense. I mean, its hopping human to human, so lets slaughter all the pigs, because the flu has the word "swine" in it. :lol:

Wow, i thought they were all killed in alot of arab countries.

Alot of food .... but who would eat bacon at a time like this? I'd avoid it like the plague.

The strain that effects humans began and is most prevalent in pigs. Egypt is more susceptible to a new outbreak because of its dense population centers. H1N1 is not limited to human-human transmission and most cases, until recently, were from pig-human.

I am not naive enough to believe this is simply a precautionary measure. Its clearly a move to target the Non-Muslim minority of Egypt (the only people there who eat pork). Egypt has a history of making bold statements and attempts at things like this but failing to follow through.

This doesn't seem like a big deal. There is Tamiflu that will kill the flu, There are many deaths due to virus every year. What makes this such an uproar? :doh

Wow....they over react much? This could turn into a serious issue, but slaughtering all your pigs ain't gonna do much about it.
 
Just to give a quick idea as to how many flu deaths there were in the past few years. These are only children, as adults are not tabulated.

During the 2003-04 Season, 153 flu-associated deaths in children were reported to CDC.
During the 2004-05 Season, 47 deaths in children were reported to CDC.
During the 2005-06 Season, 46 deaths in children were reported to CDC.
As of August 6, 2007, 68 deaths in children occurring during the 2006-07 season have been reported to CDC.
