US journalist jailed in Iran goes on hunger strike

    Source: AP
    April 25, 2009

TEHRAN, Iran The American journalist convicted of spying in Iran has gone on a hunger strike to protest her imprisonment, her father said Saturday.

Roxana Saberi, a 31-year-old dual American-Iranian citizen, was convicted of spying for the United States and sentenced to eight years in prison after a swift, closed door trial earlier this month.

Saberi was arrested in late January and initially accused of working without press credentials, but earlier this month, an Iranian judge leveled the far more serious allegation of espionage.

"She went on a hunger strike Tuesday to protest her imprisonment. Today is the fifth day," Reza Saberi told The Associated Press. "She will remain on hunger strike until she is freed."
I seriously doubt that Saberi's hunger strike will do any good. My hope is that she will be freed once her appeal is heard but considering Irans record on human rights and false imprisonment I am not very optimistic.

For some reason I doubt Iran is going to give a **** that woman is tying to starve herself to death. I know when some idiots over here try to use starving themselves to death as some sort of blackmail I could care less.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Iran is a politically sick nation...they must drive out the Islamic extremeists....a rather tall order..
I believe the only solution is for the Iranian people to see and hear how much better off people are in a moderate nation....with a government by, for, and of the people....This will take time.
It took 75 years for communism to fall....maybe 750 years for extreme Islam to die...
Why would any sane man or woman want to be in Iran ??.., unless they have a death wish..

There are many people jailed for things we deem wrong, why should i care about this one case?
It's sad but she should not have stepped foot in Iran

to quote my favorite President of all time (President Barlet from the West Wing)

" Did you know that two thousand years ago a Roman citizen could walk across the face of the known world free of the fear of molestation? He could walk across the earth unharmed, cloaked only in the words "Civis Romanis" I am a Roman citizen. So great was the retribution of Rome, universally understood as certain, should any harm befall even one of its citizens. Where was Morris' protection, or anyone else on that plane? Where is the retribution for the families and where is the warning to the rest of the world that Americans shall walk this earth unharmed, lest the clenched fist of the most mighty military force in the history of mankind comes crashing down on your house!? In otherwords, Leo, what the hell are we doing here?"

Roxana is a person with a family that loves her and cares about her well being. You should care because you are a kind decent human being with feelings. A person who cares about people who suffer unjust human rights violations regardless of who they are. Even if you are not related or friends with the person. If someone from your family was suffering I would care about them.

Your right. I should be worried.

The President of Iran stepped in for the first time in this case. Hopefully it will garner a result
