50% tax rate for high earners

Its 50% of earnings over 150000. That means everything under the 150000 will be taxed with lower tax rates.

So say you earn 200000. The first 150000 will be taxed with say 40% or 30% or whatever the rate is, and the 50000 past the 150000 will be taxed by 50%.

Holy **** 50%! Only a liberal can justify metaphorically raping someone in the ass with a unfair and unjust tax rate. This is why there should be a flat tax rate and no deductions. This idea that you be should be gouged just because you work harder and earn more is a load of crap.

The problem being that we live in a society that rewards ownership and not work

You mean like the 86.45% marginal top tax rate under the Republican Senate and House in 1946? Interestingly enough, taxes went down after the Democrats retook Congress in 1948 for a few years.

Even worse, the Republican congress under Eisenhower had a truly massive 91% marginal top tax rate and did not lower the tax rate while they maintained power for 2 years.

Even more interestingly, the lowest marginal tax bracket in recent US history, at 28% was under Democrats in 1988, partially which can be attributed to Reagan, but remember that the Executive branch writes no laws and tax code is legislated through Congress. And Reagan was a Uber-Liberal when it came to spending.

The lowest since the 20th century was a mere 7% which again was under Democrat Congressional control.

Facts, you know. Use 'em.

Budget 2009: Rich face 50% top tax rate | UK news | guardian.co.uk

BUDGET: KEY POINTS
50% tax rate for earnings over £150,000
Growth forecast revised down
Borrowing increased
£15bn 'efficiency savings'
£2bn help for young unemployed
£1bn to boost housing market
Car scrapping scheme

Well, the rate should have always been higher for the rich but is this really the right time? :/
Not to mention Cameron lit up Darling, it was so amusing to watch.
So the "rich" should pay 50% of their earnings in taxes. You believe that is just, correct?

That is formulated wrong.

The "rich" will pay 50% tax on earnings OVER 150k. Very big difference.

No, not really. It's still government telling people they make too much money.

Two different things, and your attitude is typical of certain people who could give a crap about the rest of the world.. they are called egotists. The UK tax system, like the US tax system is a progressive tax system. That means the more you earn, the more you pay in real dollars and in % of the last dollar earned. It has been so since for over a century and in that century those societies implementing these forms of taxation have ruled the world so to say. No one likes to pay taxes, but at least I can admit that my tax dollars go to things that I find sensible and good for society as a whole. It aint perfect, but it is the best system we have as it stands now.

Having a "R" next your name doesn't automatically make you a conservative and having a "D" next to your name doesn't automatically make you a liberal.

LOL
I'm not rich, i'm a student.
When i go into my field i'd be taxed 45%.

That's not enough.
You're a Liberal, and you should set an example.

Live in a cave.
Eschew electricity.
Bicycle to work or school.
Bathe monthly in the local river.
Pay a minimum of 70% of your earnings in taxes and then go to the government if you're in a pinch and need help.
If you get pregnant, that's a huge carbon footprint you'd bring into the world; abort it.
Go vegetarian.

Just for starters.

Marx's progressive taxation hasn't been around a century in the US.

Why should the US follow the second rate EU countries?
Hell, we helped destroy them and then helped build them.
You'd think these nitwits would get a clue... as their third rate citizens left and created the greatest nation for good in the world.

And you try to tell me on another thread Europeans aren't "clueless".
They are... it's how you get the hordes of sheep you folks call citizens.

50% taxes, 45% taxes, 39% taxes... is criminal.
The government is too big, too incompetent and spends too much... the roles need be reversed.
Government gets to live off our scraps, not the other way round.

Anyone with half a brain understands that this is simple, irrelevant, correlation.
Show the necessarly relationship between 'progressive taxation' and 'ruling the world'.

No one likes to pay taxes, but at least I can admit that my tax dollars go to things that I find sensible and good for society as a whole.
That you find those things sensible doesnt in any way create a sound argument for them, or for progressive taxation.

Progressive taxation is a manifestation of 'from each according to his means to each according to his needs', and nothing more.

Damn few tax dollars go for anything remotely sensible, and most tax dollars go to things that are decidedly bad for society as a whole and for individuals.

If every last dime of my taxes went to sensible things like defense spending, I might be less troubled (although I'd still want to make sure the spending was prudently done). If every last dime of my taxes went to sensible things like roads and bridges, I might be similarly less troubled. As barely a dime of my taxes goes to either of these sensible things, or any other sensible thing, taxes are thus divorced from any justification, and are merely government coercively telling the putatively "rich" that they make too much money.

Why should they have to?

Nice attempt to sneak in an insult.

PeteEU doesn't understand what "liberty" really is.

He subscribes to that theory of liberty that says "what's mine is mine and what's yours is....mine." Not that he'll ever admit that the collectivist ideals he touts as the height of civic virtue are little more than a perverse and extremely malignant narcissism.

I don't really care.

The rich has had a damn sweet ride in UK for the last decade - The rest of us do not have a option of moving abroad if taxes rise, we pay taxes. Why shouldn't they?

Seems fair to me tho i do think as well as raising it 5% on the rich, they should bring it up by 1/2% on everyone.

Do you think this is Chinese Take-Out... where you can pick and choose combinations?
No, no, no... in the words of Obama's mentor, Rev Wright.

BUT...

If you are voluntarily paying "a minimum of 70% of your earnings in taxes and then go to the government if you're in a pinch and need help"... OK... plus one other from the list... then... seeing as you're only learning the responsibilities of being a Good Socialist... The Oversight Authorities will let it got for now.

But we expect you to look like Tarzan and smell like Cheetah in the near future, while executing the Chinese Menu selection above (One item... plus 70% taxes).

.

Haha, i'm not a socialist and no i don't think 70% is acceptable, i think it's ridiculous actually seeing the mortages here are off the rails.

Okay you drive a hard bargain, If i do 3 of those on the list, can i skip the 70% taxes?

Seriously think about this please.

Does anyone wake up in the morning a go well its a new year I better get first 1/3rd of it out of the way paying for government at work.

Or does someone work hard and innovate only to pay a higher tax rate.

Of course they don't, no one actively gets up in the morning doing their daily slog to pay taxes.

Peoples incomes do not exist to pay for government.

PeteEU doesn't understand what "liberty" really is.

PeteEU, and most Libs/Socialists seem to fail to understand what Liberty is.
It's tough to debate someone who fails to recognize the great good Liberty brings... for all mankind.

It's not taught in schools, and look at the EU's attempt at a Constitution.
It may as well have started out:

We the SuperState, in order to form a more perfect Socialist Union, mandate You are Our Subjects, and we Your Master in order to secure all lives and all futures are equal, have equal results, have equal status, have equal incomes and taxation, and only through this SuperState are you blessed to live as we see fit, and for this purpose, your well being, we do ordain and establish this Constitution for the SuperState, aka The European Union.

In Europe they think "Liberty" is an American Style Pizza, and in the US it seems Liberty now means having the Right to Other People's Money.

I fully understand what liberty is. But liberty comes with a cost and a responsibility and that is something you dont seem to understand.

Hey I actually agree with you, however I am also a realist.

Like it or not, we need government, else we would have anarchy. Like it or not we need government else we would never have dug ourselves out of the dark ages. Like it or not, we need government to keep order in the streets and people safe. Like it or not, we need government to be the binding force of society, so we have this thing called "a country". Like it or not we need that government to provide an umbrella of services that we have agreed to provide via the government. Like it or not we need government.

I would love to have no government, but then I also know that the rich and powerful would do anything and everything in their power keep the masses down.. they did it for 2000+ years so why should they not try again if it was not for government? At least with government we have in a democracy, a say in how things are run... in principle.

All this costs money and to get that money, we have chosen a system of taxation. That is life, and like it or not you DO get up in the morning to earn a living well knowing that a part of that effort will go to the tax man to fund the society that you are living in. It goes to the police, army, roads, welfare and so on.

I also agree fully, that high taxes on the rich punishes that drive " to do more", and frankly I hate it. However saying that, I understand the principle and the practice of doing so, and as long as that top tax rate is not insane like it was decades ago in some countries including the US (60+%, even 90+% in some places), then I can live with the fact that on the last Euros that I make, that I will pay a higher tax rate on them. This is because I know, that my sacrifice will provide in part, services for my fellow citizens and my self. It also means that the "weaker" in society who do not earn what I earn, can get a bit of help by a lower tax bill and maybe just maybe, be able to work their way up the never ending ladder of prosperity. It is also a very well known fact, the more you earn, the better you can pay someone to exploit the tax code, so in fact in the end you pay relatively less than someone earning far less than you.

Like it or not, our societies come with a cost for everyone.. that cost is taxes. Without taxes, our societies would be a miss match of tribal areas run by warlords, waring on each other over resources and women and probably STILL paying some sort of tax to the "ruler".
