One in 10 video gaming youths could be addicted

Can you become addicted to video games?

A new research article out today in the journal Psychological Science suggests that the answer is yes.

Nearly one in 10 children and teens who play video games showed signs of what could be considered addiction to games in a January 2007 Harris poll that the research is based upon.

The poll of 1,178 U.S. kids and teens (aged 8 to 18) found that 8.5% of those who played video games exhibited at least six of 11 addiction symptoms such as skipping household chores or homework to play games, poor performance on tests of homework because of playing, and playing games to escape problems.

Exhibiting six of 11 such symptoms can lead to being diagnosed with an addiction such as pathological gambling. The Iowa State University researchers adopted the gambling addiction criteria for its self-administered questionaire because there is no current medical diagnosis of video game addiction.

I'm sure no one here is addicted to videogames.

I used to be addicted to playing video games while getting blazed. Now i am just addicted to getting blazed.

Hey, its better than being addicted to American idol, or Jerry Springer.
It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.

OMG THE VIDEO GAMES ARE GOING TO RUIN US.

    Seriously? These are the criteria?

    skipping household chores
    skippping homework
poor performance on tests of homework
    playing games to escape problems

This could apply to books, sports, music, TV shows, the internet, playing with friends, eating and I can go on and on.

Yes, video games can be addictive. So can ANYTHING that produces an entertaining fun environment that causes endorphines to be released. So ****ing what?

Who the **** cares? Why is this my problem? Addicted to video games....really? So what. Poor bastard can't ration their time wisely, it ain't my fault. And video game addiction probably has the least amount of real world affect. What, is some video game nerd gonna break into my apartment with a Triforce and a boomerang to steal from me so they can get the next expansion to World of Warcraft? Doubtful. So in the end who gives a ****, why should I give a ****? Let people do as they want till the point in which they infringe upon the rights of others in which case the government can then rightfully intercede. Until that point, mind your own god damned business.

    10% sound way too low.

Seriously, if it's anything like video poker gambling at the local bars I'd think about 50% would be more like it. It can ruin your life!

    Solution?

Parents need to act like PARENTS.

Wait.. sorry, it's the Obama era, we need to have congressional hearings, and pass laws.
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

You realize this isn't just an Obama thing. The poster that posted this thread and identifies himself firmly on the Right has repeatedly over and over again called for government involvement and actual banishment of the medium before as a means of "fixing" this.

I could care less what side anyone is on. Parents, PARENTS are to blame for their children playing too much video games.

    PERIOD.

There is no other excuse, and government involvement in this would be... bad.

I'm a gamer, hell I'm playing Eveonline as I type this (I'm mining) my WIFE had more consoles then I did when I met her (I love her for that). My son is allowed to play video games, HOWEVER, I limit is playing, know the games he plays... ya know.. I do what needs be done.

That's the only right solution, everything else is bull****, regardless of political affiliation. My comment about Obama was that he seems to be one that would actually use the government to fix a personal problem.
