Ron Paul: Bring back private pirate hunters

It would be cheaper than using our armed forces, and would give the Xe guys (formerly known as Blackwater) something to do - Perfect fit, too.

And who watches the pirate busters to make sure they aren't looting a ship that isn't full of pirates?

Who cares, as long as they aren't looting our ships? That's how privateering works.

So you are ok with crimes happening just as long as it isn't against our own ships. Got it.

This is what they actually plan on doing:

Clinton unveils initiative to combat 'scourge of piracy'

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday unveiled a diplomatic initiative to thwart attacks on ships off Somalia's coast and combat what she called the "scourge of piracy."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called for measures to help combat pirate attacks off Somalia.

Clinton said the State Department will "explore ways to track and freeze pirate assets," similar to measures used against drug traffickers and terrorists.

Oldest trick in the book... Do nothing about the underlying problems and then just steal their money. I guess this is how they plan to make up for the deficit.

"We have a pretty good idea where the land bases are and we want to know what the Somali government, what tribal leaders who perhaps would not like to have the international community bearing down on them, would be willing to do to rid their territory of these pirate bases," she said.

TERRORIST.

In case you haven't noticed this before, I'm okay with a lot of things.

If our leaders think that authorizing privateers is the most effective way to fight piracy, that's okay. If our privateers wander off the reservation and start attacking other vessels, which is practically an inevitability, that's okay too. And when other countries get pissed off and start sinking our privateers, I am also perfectly okay with that.

That's why we use freelancers instead of using our own Navy.

Well I guess if a freelancer kills your family, that's ok too right?

No, but freelancers are no more likely to kill my family than the Navy is, and I would actually have recourse-- legal or otherwise-- against freelancers. If the Navy kills my family, there's not much I can do but sit there and take it.

Personally, I'd rather arm merchant ships. Unfortunately, it seems that insurance companies and foreign governments are committed to making that impossible.

Apparently so is President Obama, since he personally ordered the rescue of an American ship, but seems ok with not rescuing foreign ships.

:rofl

Who exactly would be commissioning these bounties?

That doesn't make any sense. If the goal is to end piracy off the coast of Somalia, encouraging American pirates to kill Somali pirates (and whoever else they want to kill) would hardly accomplish that goal. It would just mean that the new pirates were wealthier and had better weapons and boats.

That is a hopelessly impractical view of foreign affairs. If the British then start sinking our privateers, but it turns out it was just an American boat carrying medical supplies, then suddenly we're at war with Britain. :doh

Like that Indian fishing boat that was sunk by the Chinese off the coast of Somalia...?

This signature I'm using is more than a joke, I believe it could be the solution against pirate attacks. Imagine if every ship cruising Somalian waters carried a military trained, freelance sniper. You can't see where they are on the ship. A pirate boat comes up and starts lobbing RPG's onto the ship. Boom, the rules of engagement are activated. A pirate drops dead. Say what? The pirates look around and see nothing. Another pirate drops, neat hole in his forehead. "Let's get the f*** out of here, they yell in Somalian, and the boat spins around quickly. Ship safe, pay earned, problem solved.

It's kinda funny when an anti-gun type suggests civilians with guns are a solution to a problem.

Gotta love the hypocrisy.:2wave:

All through this thread.

So you are pro-gun now? You have no problem with me owning and shooting an m4 or an AK-47 variant?

The point I was making in that thread...several times....was that firearms enthusiasts should take the lead in figuring out how to keep guns out of the hands of deranged individuals. Is that too complex for you, that the only choices you have are "anti-gun" or "pro-gun"?
