Cybersecurity Act would give president power to 'shut down' Internet

I swear to God, hell hath no fury like college students who cannot log onto Facebook to upload pictures from last-night's wet t-shirt contest.

Oh, hell knows a much greater fury than that. It's the fury of the gamer when they can't connect to their WoW realm.

Shutting down the intertubes isn't nearly as hard as you guys think.

First would go the intercontinental links... severing us from the outside world.

Second would come the interstate links... ie: shutting down key routers in the country... This wouldn't last long as secondary routers would step up and start doing the work...

But if you could make a company turn it's fiber off... you could shut down internet for areas of people, pretty easily.

What would be the point of all of this? Now the internet becomes badly crippled, if not worthless. The president has just done the job for the attacker. Good job Mr. President!

It's kinda like how if a server is under a heavy DDoS attack, the admin will shut it down. Either way, it's a win for the attacker.

Good luck trying to "shut it down," a-holes.

This is so easy to counter. Especially with democrats in power.

In order to get Democrats to not do something, you have to convince them there will be victims. Particularly "the poor".

Now, all we need to do, is get a petition started by people who have switched to internet phone service via their cable internet provider, or Vanoage, or MagicJack, etc....
If the government shuts off the internet, it will create a whole group of victims who will be without phone service. Most of these people will be the ones who switched to the internet phone services to save money because they aren't rich and powerful. No phone services, means little children die because nobody can call 911 or another emergency service.

Nevermind the foolishness of actually trying to shut down the internet. Suppose they could do it, what would the effect be? If the internet can just be "shut down" without all chicken little catastrophes Big Brother warns us about, then doesn't that make this provision redundant?
