Blogger becomes casualty of Iran cyber-wars

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - The first line of his first blog from Tehran in September 2006 asks: "What is freedom?" Omidreza Mirsayafi answered his own question. "I don't know," he wrote, "but I know someday I will see its shadow falling on my land."
Two and half years later, from behind the gray walls of Tehran's Evin Prison, he phoned his mother. They talked about his battle with depression behind bars. She asked if he was taking his heart medicine.
A few hours later, on a chilly mid-March evening, the 29-year-old Mirsayafi was dead. He was Iran's first known casualty in the skirmishes between bloggers challenging the Islamic regime and authorities striking back with the tools they know best—imprisonment and intimidation.
while a tragic tale indeed, perhaps this will be the inciting incident to bring about real reform in Iran and subsequently in the ME

I have said more than once, the Islamics should hold their heads in shame.
    They fear freedom of speech...

Yep, in Iran I totally couldn't say "Either Mohammed was a pedophile or Ayesha was a liar - pick one." I would be beheaded.

Believe it or not there is and has been a growing human rights and democracy movement in Iran. The introduction of the internet will be the death knell of the regime.

which is why i believe Iran will fall from within, but only if people are willing to put their lives on the line for it to happen. that is why iran is backwards, no washington, no MLK etc...
and a bunch of cowards unwilliing to make a stand against the establishment to make a better society in the future

They're not cowards. They have to work behind the scenes until their movement gets popular support. Remember, MLK was assassinated. Getting your head chopped off is a pretty good incentive to work stealthily.

Wasn't Iran pretty close to beginning the change.. up until bush put them on the "axis of evil" or whatever?
George Washington didn't use his freedom of speech to win the war with Britain... He shot them.

This reminds me of Zahra Kazemi. She was an interesting woman who did some solid work reporting the youth movement inside Iran.

Google her name, you'll find many a fascinating articles on her and her body of work.
Pain can be such a beautiful thing

    Not a hope.

They execute homosexuals, call for the extermination of Israel, don't allow candidates to run for office they don't approve of, and scream "Death to America" as a response to Obama's crawling to the Iranian leadership.

This won't do anything, it's just another victim of their twisted belief system.

    Remember this... on American soil?
Asked about the execution of homosexuals in Iran, Ahmadinejad said, "In Iran, we don't have homosexuals, like in your country. ...

    LOL.

    No.

    Especially weak Americans like Obama.
