Black man's killing by police shakes La. town

For 73 years before his killing by a white police officer, Bernard Monroe led a life in this northern Louisiana town as peaceful as they come — five kids with his wife of five decades, all raised in the same house, supported by the same job.

The black man's shooting death is attracting far more attention than he ever did, raising racial tensions between the black community and Homer's police department

Too early to tell. But then again this is Louisiana and these are cops. But whatever happens the odds don't look good for the dead man. Just sayin'. Slap on the wrists. Don't do it again. 3-6 months without pay. 2 year suspension. Any of these would seem to be almost protocol in the North with cops who **** up and it wouldn't even be remotely shocking if it happened in the South. Specially in the South. It seems like rarely do cops who kill civilians without any kind of criminal actually end up in jail. I mean I could be wrong and I probably am but I've heard very few(none actually) stories of cops in general population.

You're right, most cops who kill civilians probably don't end up in jail... because when we look at the facts surrounding these cases, most times there are very murky circumstances. Was there a drug deal or wasn't there? Was there a chase or wasn't there? Was the old man confronting the cops or wasn't he? Was there a gun, or something that resembled a gun or wasn't there? Did the cops plant the gun or didn't they?

And it's easy for many of us, when reading these stories, to ignore the fact that homicide and race are and have been strongly correlated for decades.

I suppose police are trained to ignore this fact and see the world through neutral-colored lenses. One man is no more likely to be a threat because of the color of his skin, right? To think anything else just wouldn't be appropriate, right?

:doh

[ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugenics]Eugenics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

Since the postwar period, both the public and the scientific communities have associated eugenics with Nazi abuses, such as enforced racial hygiene, human experimentation, and the extermination of undesired population groups. However, developments in genetic, genomic, and reproductive technologies at the end of the 20th century have raised many new questions and concerns about what exactly constitutes the meaning of eugenics and what its ethical and moral status is in the modern era.

See? I can sound completely ridiculous too :)

You already do.

without evidence you bring up race as the factor. rather speculative of you.

typical race baiting on your part.

"Police said Monroe was shot after he pointed a gun at them,"

but instead of waiting to wait until the investigation concludes, you want to believe one side over another...

how sharpton of you.

Given that the VAST majority of blacks live in the South we can assume that most incidences involving blacks and police would happen there. Right?

So what state do you live in that has no racial problems?

Where do you live, Hatuey?

I love these liberal bleeding heart stories... a black male, peaceful, good guy, never did anything wrong, gunned down by trigger happy cops for no REASON! Obviously it was skin color and nothing else that caused this senseless death, and the cops will get off sctt free!

I love how lefties like Hatuey are ready to judge, jury and executioner of the police. What happened to such foreward thinking premises like I dunno... innocent until proven guilty? Or, not rushing to judgement?

I wonder Hatuey, if this had been some black thugs, killing a white man, would you even bother to mention it? Black cops killing an older white man?

Somehow, I think not. You just cannot resist the sirens call of a case of a black man being shot by the cops can you?

To be honest mate I find the police in Britain to be very dubious myself. They are heavy handed, authoritarian and politically correct. It seems when they're not beating people up for not compying with the smallest little request or keeping your dna on file when you haven't even been charged, they are telling people to take down their English flag because it is "racist" or arresting Christian missionaries who go into Muslim neigherbourhoods.

I'm no expert but US police look even more heavy-handed to me, just from TV though, even if they are a little less PC.

Well these people do weild power, we must always be on guard against those in positions of trust and power.

We entrust the police to protect us. We MUST trust that they do the right thing, and give the investigative arms time to work.

But by no means should we give the Obama administration any time, right?

Small southern town, and this is what you get.

On the other hand, large southern city, and you get something completely different. In Bellaire, a bedroom community embedded inside Houston, a cop shot a baseball player who had a good chance of making the Majors. His crime? He was black and driving a Mercedes. He was sitting down in his driveway, unarmed, when the cop shot him in the liver. The result? The cop was indicted this week. He will be going to a Texas prison, where there are LOTS of black inmates who would give their eye teeth to kill a crooked cop.

That can be handled in another thread if you'd like. Obama is trying to do things that are wrong, so no, he shouldn't get anytime. when he stops trying to turn the country into a socialst, cradle to grave nanny state then maybe, but otherwise...

no, he deserves no acceptance of failed ideas and plans.

You are so predictable..as are most partisan hacks....
You use past tense, FAILED, only after 2 months....

Wow....

Now you decide to wait for the investigation to conclude instead of blaming somebody right off the bat....

Heart of the story:

"Police said Monroe was shot after he pointed a gun at them, though no one claims Monroe fired shots. Friends and family said he was holding a bottle of sports water. They accuse police of planting a gun he owned next to his body"

You're not supposed to point guns at cops.

Those trigger happy sons-of-bitches have wet dreams for the days when it happens.

No, I look at historical equivilents of the same thing Obama is trying, has been or is being tried elsewhere... ain't working there, why would it work here?

Nice try though.

What would make for "good odds" for the dead man?

Very ungentlemanly of you to not tell us where you live, Hatuey.

It sorta makes you a troll.

Nope, that is foolish. Those granted power must be held very accountable and kept a very close eye on. Vague trust is not enough. Power corrupts and it certainly does the police from what I know. A tight rein is the only way to approach such a service.
