Think Progress Texas lawmaker: Asians should change their names to make them ‘easier for Americans to deal with.’

On Tuesday, State Rep. Betty Brown (R) caused a firestorm during House testimony on voter identification legislation when she said that Asian-Americans should change their names because they’re too hard to pronounce:

“Rather than everyone here having to learn Chinese — I understand it’s a rather difficult language — do you think that it would behoove you and your citizens to adopt a name that we could deal with more readily here?” Brown said.

Brown later told [Organization of Chinese Americans representative Ramey] Ko: “Can’t you see that this is something that would make it a lot easier for you and the people who are poll workers if you could adopt a name just for identification purposes that’s easier for Americans to deal with?”

Yesterday, Brown continued to resist calls to apologize. Her spokesman said that Democrats “want this to just be about race.”

What an idiot!!

I love it that the Chinese-American she was talking to was named 'Ko'. Because that name is so damn difficult to pronounce.
But for real, if we want to start talking about difficult last names, start with the Polish or Indian ones. I talked to an Indian lady last week who had about 15 letters in her last name.

That's just funny....I wonder what her stance on illegal immigration is.

Their names are already written in english form, why the **** care if someone has a hard time pronouncing it? I am pretty sure there are words in the english dictionary that are hard for some people to pronounce. If someone makes a mistake in pronouncing it then I am sure the individual can correct that person on the correct pronunciation of his or her name.

The founder of the ACLU is a communist, the founder of the planned parenthood is a racist eugenicist and one of the aclu lawyers who tried to strike down Megan's and Jessica's law is a pedophile.

Nice!!! Critique State Rep. Betty Brown (R), then target a couple of ethnic groups for the same reason. :lamo

Re: Texas lawmaker: Asians should change their names to make them ‘easier for America

1) Most people with names that are very difficult to pronounce for an English speaker Anglosize their names when they are naturalized.

2) Americans should learn Chinese. It's the new French.

Which would make the NRA communists, The RNC a bunch of pedophiles and Michael Savage a fag. Come back when you want to address what I said ;)

You are the one who decided to try to use someone to tarnish another group of people. I can play that game too.

Legislation | Betty Brown - State Representative, District 4

Interesting guy, but a good man none the less. My main objection with the ACLU is their selective support of fundamental rights (the right to own a firearm in particular).

What group of people did I decide to tarnish? Are you insinuating that the rabidly anti-illegal immigration also tend to be associated with those who have ridiculously simpleton ideas about language? I asked a simple question ;)

I think that should apply to Sarah Palin's kids before it applies to Asians.

Another nail in your conservative coffin. Did you pick on a liberal, no. Did you pick on a moderate, no. There is a pattern here whether you like it or not, Bush will be next no doubt.

Palin has nothing to do with this btw.

Exactly. France is largely irrelevant now yet French is still taught in our schools. French was previously "the language of diplomacy." This has changed to English and I would say the two most important languages (after English) to teach children are Spanish and Mandarin. The relevance of Spanish is even questionable.

Actually, this thread does remind me of a joke.

q. how do Chinese name their kids?

a. they throw all their silverware up in the air, and whatever noise the silverware makes when hitting the floor is the kid's name.

So americanwoman insults two ethnic groups after critisizing State Rep. Betty Brown (R) for doing the same thing. Then danarhea has an issue with the pronunciation of Palin. :doh

Truly a double shot of EPIC FAIL.

I don't have an issue with it at all. It was just a joke, sourpuss.
