Al Jazeera's Presence on PBS Alarms Some - Presidential Politics | Political News - FOXNews.com
Al Jazeera television is known for airing Islamic extremist videos and even hosted an on-air birthday celebration for convicted Lebanese terrorist Samir Kuntar who murdered four Israelis in 1979.

"It is a professional institution but it is a militant institution that wants to convey an ideological Jihadi message," said Walid Phares, a terrorism analyst for FOX News.

Critics charge that the Jihadist message now is making its way to public broadcasting in America.

PBS' new program, WorldFocus, airs international reports from Al Jazeera's English channel -- one of many foreign broadcasters, like England's ITN and Israel's Channel 10, included in the newscast.

But according to some in Congress, there is little difference between Al Jazeera's networks that broadcast in Arabic or English and, they say, PBS, which is partially funded by taxpayer dollars, is recklessly promoting Al Jazeera by airing the segments.

Of all the things to demonize and despise... Public television? Really? Death to Sesame Street and NOVA!
PBS is not a terrorist organization. It is not the Palestinian Bomber's Society. Perhaps you're confused. PBS is by far the best source for objective, in depth and meaningful television journalism in the United States. The quality of commentary and reporting on CBS, ABC, Fox, NBC and the various cable networks (including the unfortunate, pathetic FOX news network) comes nowhere near to that of PBS. It's no contest.
Virtually every political science professor I ever had (and every journalism professor I ever had) from radical socialist to reactionary conservative acknowledged the unquestionable superiority of PBS as a television news source for thinking persons. And it's undeniably the best source for educational television. Show me some proof of a terrorist agenda and I'll be the first to call for the revocation of government funds. But the use of some Al-Jazeera footage does not make that connection. Not even close.

Al Jazeera is like the BBC of the Middle East. I don't see what the big deal is here. This is just FOX hype.

yes you can compare fox and Al Jazeera ..... funny

Al Jazeera is Fox's counterpart in the Middle East. No wonder they are threatened by them appearing on American television!

LOL!

So Fox is criticizing Al Jazeera?

That's like Bizzarro Superman versus Bizzarro Spiderman.

I am guessing that those "some in Congress" are the same people who are saying that Obama is making "re-education camps" and that are making lists of "socialists in Congress". And their backers are people like Glen Black, Hanity, and O'Rielly who are at the moment promoting conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory and letting these "some one" come on air to promote their bs in prime time.

I also bet that these "some" have never seen Al Jazerra in English...

Indeed. The first thing i saw on Al Jazerra english was an interview with an iraqi kurdish women who said that golden stautes of George Bush and Tony Blar should be erected in the center of Baghdad. But it seams what the channel actually broadcasts will get alot less attention then the fact that it has an "Al" in its name.

Oh, I made a grave mistake earlier... I said that Al Jazeera was the Fox counterpart in the Middle East. That was a complete and utter error. It is actually much better than Fox because its staff and journalists are compromised of members of the international community. For instance, many former BBC journalists work there. It is an honest news network that portrays news in the Middle East.

The reason why it got a bad wrap in the West was because it aired the Al Qaeda tapes, but that does not make Al Jazeera an accessory to terrorism, simply a functional journalist organization. We in the West would likely not have had the opportunity to see those tapes had the Western media not recorded the Al Jazeera broadcastings and then translated them to the public.

4. Special Report with Bret Baier: 2,092,000 total viewers

Hardly sensational. It's the straightest, most boring news show around.

That's it's appeal.

If Fox has a couple of honest reporters who aren't bogged down by the network, then I wouldn't know who they are because I gave up tuning into that crap a long time ago. It's tabloid media, nothing more.

That is all.

You have no idea what you are talking about. What conspiracy theories???

And to underscore your casual regard for truth and accuracy, here's the correct spelling of their names:

1. The O'Reilly Factor: 3,438,000 total viewers
2. Hannity: 2,579,000 total viewers
3. Glenn Beck: 2,271,000 total viewers

That is all from you. But, that is not all to this matter. You just are clueless and as such you should either qualify your (original) comments or say nothing unless you wish to be called on it.

Re-education camps.

List of "socialists" in Congress

And that is just from the last week.

And how would "some in Congress" know that there is little difference between the Arabic and English versions? Have they actually watched both extensively to come to that conclusion, or are they just parroting what "some people" tell them?

I don't speak Arabic, so I can't comment on the Arabic channel, but Al Jazeera in English has some very good programs hosted by professional, Western trained journalists. The quality is right up there with CNN International and the BBC.

I wonder if the thought of Al Jazeera on PBS makes Glenn Beck cry for America? :rofl

Glenn Beck, is very afraid for America... so afraid it makes him cry. Bet he is scared of his own shadow!

Amazing how libs and anti-American scum are in denial that Al-Jazeera is a terrorist propaganda network. Aiding a terrorist propaganda network is not something a tax payer funded network is supposed to do.

Death to Sesame Street and NOVA!

Are you saying that all those shows on PBS are so crappy that they can not survive without the aid of tax payers? IF those shows are really that good then they should be able to do well on privately owned tv stations. Tax payers shouldn't be aiding/subsidizing failing businesses.

Not everything on the station is propaganda - it's a news channel. It broadcasts to most of Europe as well as the Middle East (including many nations that are our allies), reaching over 130,000,000 viewers with its English broadcast alone. Your stance is as ridiculous as calling FOX a Republican propaganda network. If they show a few minutes of Al Jazeera, they're giving Americans a perspective they often don't get the chance to see, same as with the BBC or the major Israeli network. Do you have an issue with the latter, since it could be construed as Jewish propaganda?

Sesame Street is far less "crappy" than just about any other children's show on TV, most of which are vaguely obscene and devoid of beneficial content. I'd rather not have very young kids being manipulated by commercials while they watch educational television they enjoy, and so I support PBS.
